Art School

I am going into my senior year in high school and I need help. I want to go to an art school because I'm interested in film, painting, and creative writing, however, I don't know which ones I should apply for or visit. I want to go to school in a big city like NYC, Boston, Chicago, etc. However, my family has been struggling with money recently and my mother can only afford sending me somewhere where it would cost $25,000 or below. My dream school was always Parsons in NYC but it is just too expensive. Do you know any schools that is like Parsons (but cheaper) that I should look into?
Thank you so much for your help!

What state do you live in? Some state universities have first-rate art colleges: UNC School of the Arts, Mason Gross at Rutgers, et al come to mind immediately. How are your academic statistics? Look into Tyler School at Temple. Some colleges might offer you a merit scholarship if your portfolio and transcript are very strong. Have you checked out CCs forum for art students?

I live in Oklahoma and I have a 3.4 GPA and I got a 30 on the ACT. I have no desire to stay in Oklahoma.

Put together a good portfolio. Your GPA and ACT score are high enough to pass muster at almost every art college, and might earn you a scholarship. Temple/Tyler might be a very good match. Philadelphia is a fabulous arts city, and much more affordable than NYC, so it’s attracting lots of creative young people. Eckerd, in Saint Petersburg, FL, is a liberal arts college, but they give out some pretty generous scholarships, which bring the cost of attendance below $30k. They have a new “Interdisciplinary Arts” major, which allows you to create your own program among performing, visual, media, and other arts. New College of Florida, in Sarasota, is another liberal arts school where you can design your own curriculum. This past year, all accepted out-of-state students who submitted their applications by the deadline received automatic $15k scholarships (regardless of need). NCF is part of the Florida State system, and so they cost less than private colleges anyway. The cost for out-of-state students this year is about $25k. Sarasota isn’t NYC, but it has a thriving arts community. NCF abuts the Asolo Repertory Theatre and Ringling Museum. The Ringling College of Art & Design is just down the road, and the Sarasota Opera is very well-respected. Saint Petersburg also has two good museums (the Museum of Fine Art and the Salvador Dali museum).

I would not suggest New College for art majors. Its “design your own curriculum” is not conducive to the arts.

I would suggest Florida State University which has an excellent film school. Tallahassee is not “big city” by any means but their film major is one of the top from what I understand.

You may want to check out University of Central Florida which has a SVAD. Don’t know a lot about it but it looks like it covers all your interests. Located in Orlando which is a large town (but spread out unlike NYC for example). Also (like FSU) a state school so more affordable.
