Hi I’m a senior and my gpa is a 2.5 at the moment. It’s not great. I still have the rest of the year to fix this and raise it to at least a 2.9 or 3.0 gpa, but I’m applying now and my grades are not up to par with my artistic skills. I need help with the search, I’m getting so nervous I just don’t even know what to do.
Savannah College of Art (SCAD) is a great school.
They accept 70 percent of students applying. The average gpa is 3.4ish and sat between 1000 and 1200 range.
I think if you are super talented and put a good portfolio together. Perhaps they would let you attend with a good application and upward trend in the gpa. Not sure of the deadlines etc. I would check it out ASAP.
I am sure there are others looking to curate talent. Google is your friend as they say. But don’t wait
I’m not sure if it will work for you, but check out VCU Arts, a very top-notch art program at a public university in a great city (Richmond/RVA). VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) is, I think, an underrated university that is really a hidden gem. It is urban and gritty AND does a great, transformative job with students who often (not always) did not excel to their fullest ability in high school. VCU Arts is very highly rated. The school is known for its communications program and has a med school. Richmond has undergone a renaissance and is very popular with students and young professionals.
What can you do to help your case? Starting today, do all your homework and give school your best. If you do that for a while, you’ll probably find it easier to keep doing it than to stop.
Do you have a portfolio? That will be key to getting into art schools like SCAD (see post above) or Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore or the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA). If not, I might suggest you take a gap year and research what you would need to put together to apply to these schools, or similar art schools.
Good luck! (Now get to work, you can do it)
