Im considering submitting an art supplement for a couple of schools (university of chicago, MI, and Stanford) and was wondering if the letter of recommendation from an art teacher was required for every school? What if you pursue art on your own and aren't close to any art teachers at school?

I encourage you to contact admissions at the colleges to which you’re planning to send the supplement and ask. The question comes up from time to time at college information sessions and if you plan to visit the colleges ask then.

My sense at colleges with which I’m familiar is that art (and music) supplement are strongly encouraged from students who have exceptional talent. The supplements are directed to “experts” (music and art departments) within the college to evaluate. Even if the evaluation is neutral I don’t think your application is compromised.

My intuition is that even in cases where the college asks that a teacher’s recommendation complement the supplement college will grant an exception, or possibly allow you to have someone outside the school provide the recommendation. But ask! Not infrequently (and this is especially the case for music/performing arts supplements) the work is done outside the school venue.
