Art Supplement Questions

I’m applying to several selective universities… namely Caltech and MIT. I have no background in art; I’m self-taught, and my first art class in high school is next semester… my last semester.

But I think maybe that my art might be a great supplement to show how truly passionate I am about space-- whether astrophysics or geophysics with a specialty in planetary sciences. My art is digital renders of different planets.

I like to think that my art is pretty great. They’re definitely not realistic, but they do have an air of surrealism and vibrant colors.

Anyway… good idea or not, considering I don’t actually want to go into art?

Honestly, probably not.

The purpose of the Art Supplement is to demonstrate proficiency and talent in a visual art. The review of the supplement is typically done by the art department. Your proposed supplement is not what the art supplement is about.

Echoing the comments above, an arts supplement is meant to showcase demonstrated ability in the field, not to show passion for sciences in an oblique manner. My D is applying for Biology at various good colleges with an arts supplement but she has won 2 national scholastic awards for art, is a recognized and published artist, has a massive portfolio and is taking advanced art classes in high school and in the local community college. You will only confuse and annoy the admissions officers and they might actually view it negatively. Almost all colleges (check out the websites of any of the ivies) suggest you submit an arts portfolio only if you have something really extraordinary. There is a reason they say so.
