Colleges often suggest that students with an interest in pursuing an art major submit artwork for evaluation by the admissions committee. Although I do not want to be an art major, I have a strong interest in painting, and was wondering whether submitting an art supplement would augment my application.

Should I submit a supplement, or are colleges not interested in art from non-art-majors?

Check out school-specific websites, but most are definitely interested in supplements from non-art majors! As long as your supplement demonstrates truly above-and-beyond talent, then you should submit it. Bear in mind that an “average” submission can hurt your application.

If you’re any good, then I would either submit a supplement or bring a portfolio to an interview. My sister took her photography portfolio to an interview with URochester. She was a prospective Bio major, but she got an art scholarship for $5000 per year. Schools love to see applicants’ talents even if they aren’t major related. So if you’re any good, make it happen.
