Art Supplement?

Ok, on the pdf download for art supplements, it says that applicants should focus on one area for visual arts supplements (design, painting/drawing/printmaking, sculpture, photography, video/digital media)

I don't know about other schools, but at least in mine students must explore a variety of different media and try different things, so I don't have any projects that stick to one category that they offer. Is anyone else having the same trouble?

and when we're mailing it to Stanford directly, does the specific art department recieve my portfolio? T_T I am so confused..

for the 2nd question, yes your supplement gets forwarded to the arts department.

When you say that you have projects that don’t stick to one category, could you clarify what you mean? I don’t see how it’s possible for a project to, say, straddle the line between sculpture and photography. Even if you have projects in different categories, could you perhaps just choose one category?

(Although I’m also submitting an art supplement, I’m not really having the same problem. My media consist of color pencil, pencil, and acrylic.)

Well keep in mind that you can submit 2! Also keep in mind that Design is one of the categories. Most pieces of art can be categorized as “design” if the focus was to work with more asthetics/composition. I submitted free hand stuff (even though this is drawing), a few photo pieces, and paintings I had done in design class. I also had a ton of photography pieces so I submited a photography portfolio.

If you can provide us with more details I may be able to give you some more ideas to help you out!

ok… so I can choose to submit a maximum of 2 portfolios
ex. I can submit max 10 images for design AND another 10 images for sculpture?
if that’s the case, I don’t have to worry about categorizing my work since I can just submit them separately
But then do I have to mail 2 separte envelopes, each containing one recommmendation letter?

Thanks for your replies! I can’t believe I’m still not sure about this when I have a week and a half left to mail it on time …

The fact that you don’t have it done is totally understandable. I finished mine like a day before it was due  Yeah… according to the PDF you can submit 2.
One thing to keep in mind:
You have to fill out the art supplement. So just upload the rec letter to the art supplement. Where it asks for the url of your portfolio just say that you included a CD and upload your art resume and everything else you need to fill out. Then save it/ submit it and print out two copies. You will have to send two copies and in two different envelopes.

wait a minute, “I” upload the recommendation letter to the common app?! I thought applicants are never allowed to read those! So I don’t have to send a recommendation letter with the envelop?

Thank you so much for your help! You saved my life :)

Well the thing about the rec letter was that common app needed/wanted it uploaded electronically and my teacher finished it the day before it was due… I was home sick because of chemo and couldn’t walk her through the uploading process at school. Instead I had her email it to me electronically and promised not to read it (mostly because I have no desire to… I feel rec letters are embarrassing). I uploaded it onto the site myself. So… I still have no clue what it says even though there’s a copy sitting right in my inbox
Haha and you are most welcome… it was super stressful for me to figure out how to best do this… and it took so long. I’m just glad I could help someone!

Thank you!!
I guess I’ll have to talk to my counselor tomorrow then, because I’d be too tempted to read the letter if I ask my teacher to send it to me haha

haha nice. You could just go to your art teachers office and ask them to upload the letter directly through your account and then submit it right then and there so that you don’t read it…

oh yeah I’ll do that , it’d be much simpler
Thanks for your help! and good luck :D
