Drawing may be my main "passion," but my favorite extracurricular activities are grounded in my high school's theater program. I paint sets, write plays, and hang out in the auditorium all the time. However, I DEFINITELY do not want to go to college FOR theater; I'll probably major in math. Does anyone know of good schools that have a good theater program/community, but NOT the kind you need to major in to get involved in?? (Good art department is good too)...

Right now I'm looking at schools like Harvey Mudd, Brown, Yale, Stanford; if anyone knows about the theater programs there please tell me about them!

In case you're wondering what kind of schools I can get into, my chance thread is here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1073328-artsy-mathy-junior-track-top-schools-other-than-ivies.html

Except for those institutions that have portfolio-only admissions to the theater design BFA program, almost every college/university theater department will be happy to have you come for a couple of classes or just to paint sets. When you are visiting the various websites, make sure to look at the theater department course offerings and requirements for admissions to the major. Programs that are open to non-majors often state that right on the website.

But, do take care. I know a professional lighting designer who began college as a physics major, and got distracted along the way.

pm, you should take a look at Williams. Excellent math department, excellent art department and pretty good theater program. Both theater backstage and music performance opportunities are open to non-majors. Double or even triple majors are fairly common.

You might find that schools differ in how easy it is to be involved in art and theater activities/classes while majoring in something else. Check the college confidential forums for the places you are interested in to see if art/theater for non-majors has been dealt with in any of the threads. For courses, the availability of pass/fail might be helpful. Brown seems like an excellent choice. Wash. U. is supposed to be a good place to combine art with another major. For LACs look at Vassar and possibly Wesleyan.

If you are female, you might look at Sarah Lawrence.

hmmm. thanks. what about non-LACs?
