Art transfer to UCLA?

Hello, are there any art major transfers around here applying to UCLA? I have an opportunity to change to an art major from an art history major. I'm just worried about the % of art transfer students admitted. Out of 200 art transfer applicants, only 25 were accepted. I'd be applying as a photography applicant. I have a strong portfolio. My GPA will be 3.7. I'm also a non-trad. I qualify for TAP too at my CC, so I will be applying for that as well.

How hard is it to transfer as art student? Does being an older student matter? Why is it so selective? Do photography concentrations even get selected?

Thoughts?

It is probably selective because this seems like something that is space limited and not completely grade based.

Your best bet would be to contact the photography department and see what they have to say (how the applicants are assessed).

I’ve never seen any discussion on here about art/photography majors. But considering you have TAP, and are a non-traditional student, you probably have a great chance if you meet their requirements. Just make sure you know what they are. I looked at assist.org and there aren’t really any specifics, except some general classes and the portfolio requirement.

Maybe this will help you start to gather info:

Thanks for the help. :)

This was the note I got back from a counselor at UCLA today…

"Thanks for your interest. To answer your first question, it is possible to be admitted to the Art program with a portfolio of photographic work. However – I should point out that the program is a BA in Art, and students complete required studio coursework in a range of media, not just photography. I will include a link with more information at the bottom of this message. As for prep for the major coursework, we evaluate prior coursework as possible substitutions for our own (lower division ) major requirements in the Summer after admission. If there are courses missing, then you would need to complete those here. "

So I’m still nervous about the whole thing. I mean, she’s implying I’ll be taking a lot of other art classes, and well, I’m a photographer not a painter. I can draw a mean stick figure. I need to decide by next week because Fall classes are filling quick. I would hate to take all these art major prereqs and not get in because I suck at studio coursework or some other arbitrary reason. I mean 25 out of 200 is telling me something, but what? Why didn’t 175 transfer student get accepted?

To be honest this doesn’t quite sound like the major for you.

Yeah, I would agree, but I have an extensive photography portfolio, and I’ve had solo art gallery exhibits, sold a lot of my work and think I’d make a great addition to their program. I’d get a lot out of it and would have a lot to contribute. Again, I’m just not an artist in the painter/sculptor field. Hmm. Lots to consider. :)

I would assume a % of the photographers they have in the program are not painters/sculpters too? We’re not usually in the same boat as they are, completely two different mediums.

Well maybe if you TAP and put it as an alternate major. I just wouldn’t put all my eggs in one basket.

Thanks, yeah, I jumped ship. Going for my original, safe major instead. Thanks for the help guys. it helped me organize my thoughts and make the right decision. :)
