@AsleepAtTheWheel, thanks so much for sharing that article. I especially liked the embedded links to the “Turning the Tide” and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation reports. As an advisor at a community-based college access center, I find it is very difficult for middle and upper income families to understand the barriers and hurdles placed in front of high performing, low income students. In most cases, they consider that these students are taking admissions slots that rightfully belong to their children. It is definitely a loaded topic awash in political and philosophical predispositions. Most high-performing, low-income students are shocked to find that they may likely pay less for an elite school than they would for the state university down the road.
I have just such a student now who is showing some interest in Amherst so I am very glad to see they are a leader in defying the disparity in admissions.
