Article on Academy Admissions

Here's a link to a Fox News article written 8/23/05. It points out the decline in academy applications and discusses some of the possible causes for the decline. I post this on the USNA thread since it has the highest viewership.

<a href="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,166566,00.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,166566,00.html</a></p>

The article doesn't point out that, although the number of applications for the USNA Class of 2009 declined by 22%, the number of qualified candidates declined only 7%. Similarly, USMA applications declined 9% while qualified candidate decline 7% also. I don't have the figures for USAFA except that overall applications were down 23%.

A somewhat surprising observation was that the number of female applicants to the USAFA increased for the 2008 and 2009 classes.

What the article fails to report, is that the "decline" is actually a return to pre 9/11 levels. If one researches the years prior to the attack, and compares the numbers of applicants to that for the class of '09, they are comparable. There was a surge in both enlistments and Academy applications following 9/11.

That's our high school mentioned and our college counselor is the one quoted. What a nice surprise!
