<p>An excellent article. It certainly supports my D’s decision to become a Nurse Practitioner. However, as far as Nursing is concerned, we should not become too smug about the current situation. The “Higher-Ups” in the Nursing Discipline are learning from the Medical Discipline and down the road (probably no more than 5-10 years) in order to take the national certification exam in many APN specialties a person will have to have a Nursing Degree at the Doctoral Level (DNP/Ph.D). Perhaps we will then see in the future a similar article entitled “The Underrated Perils of becoming an Advanced Practice Nurse”. Just some food for thought.</p>
<p>Yes, a number of nurse practioner programs have already switched from requiring a masters to a doctoral degree, and some national groups are pushing for that switch. Apparently, the states have not been interested so far in enacting that additional requirement.</p>
