Article: UMichigan and efforts to attract working class students

My kiddo goes to UMich, gets a tremendous amount of aid, and was contacted a couple of times by their regional admissions rep to answer questions and be encouraging when she was applying to schools. We’re lower middle class and from a very poor, rural school district. This is her fourth year, and we’ve been incredibly impressed by the school. They’ve provided her so many opportunities and contacts, it’s crazy. She’s been able to get very selective, very well paid research internships, and they do outreach to see if she’s doing ok financially. Last year they sent her a questionaire asking if she needed extra aid, and if so, how much more aid? She responded that another $2000 would help her a lot, and filled out all of the required forms. They sent a letter back awarding her an additional $4300 in aid based on her stats and some medical bills our family is dealing with. We really can’t say enough good things about UMich or how well my daughter has been treated.
