This may be a bit of a dumb question, but when grad apps ask you to list publications and articles published, this refers only to peer reviewed academic journals, right?

The reason why I ask is that I have been working as a journalist since I graduated, so I have published quite a few articles, but these of course are in newspapers and magazines. So i wouldn't list them under articles publsihed in my grad apps, would I?

no, i decided against j-school for a number of reasons, though i haven't ruled out returning to journalism as a career after graduate school.
I am applying to masters degrees in East Asian Studies. So any thoughts to the original question? thanks!

There is a "however" though: if you've published relevant articles as a journalist you should include them under a sub-head like "Non-academic Publications". Take a look at the CV's of some professors in your field to see just how they do it.
