Artistic Merit Scholarship

Have you found it is more diffciult to find schools that give scholarship for artistic merit? If you have been successful getting scholarships for your artist talent, can you share your experience? Are universities or art schools more likely to award money? Thank you.

i got $22,000 (for all 4 years) for SAIC shockingly.
and im a “scholarship finalist” for MICA (will be releasing april 10th)…again shockingly

my friends got a bunch of scholarships from CCA…and one got money from Otis…

“scholarship finalist” at MICA actually just refers to anyone who was accepted to the school. i remember it being really confusing last year. i don’t know why they call everyone a “scholarship finalist”. i guess to make everyone feel that MICA is acknowledging their talent?

Haha that’s what I thought. I got the “scholarship finalist” letter a couple days ago, and it was postmarked like the 11th. But I sent my scholarship stuff the 14th, and it arrived the 16th. So I figured they sent it to everyone.

I got a massive scholarships from Pratt and SCAD – but nothing from SVA. I’ve applied to UMich, and been accepted to the studio art program at the University of Texas. UT gave me no money, and I’m POSITIVE UMich will give me none, assuming I’m accepted. I received a small amount from Loyola University Chicago’s art program, and St. Edward’s University’s art/communications program gave me a large amount (very small liberal arts school in Austin). So, overall private art schools are most likely to give the most amount of money for merit scholarships. And small SMALL universities with small programs will give decent amounts of money if you’re good… huge huge schools will not give you a dime (a couple thousand at the MOST) due to the sheer number of students they have to accommodate.

^^ Pratt has already given out scholarships? I just got an acceptance email today.

My understanding is that the MICA scholarship finalist is NOT everyone–at least according to previous posts. Also, my daughter was invited to the scholarship finalist tour/luncheon April 5. It has a different schedule from the ‘regular’ admit tour. As far as how you can be a scholarship finalist BEFORE your financial aid stuff or scholarship applications get sent out, that’s easy–they want you more based on your application itself. YOu are potentially - potentially - a merit scholar. I believe (not sure) that Mica factors in financial need into its merit awards. That is, all things being equal, a merit student with no need will have a lower chance of getting a scholarship than a merit student with high need.

Also, regarding MICA, the April 10th date was written on all the private outside scholarship applications my daughter received. I was under the impression that MICA was waiting until then so they could announce need, school, and private scholarships all at once giving the student a complete package. I wondered if missing the April 5th open house would affect the scholarship outcome.

you’re right. it’s not EVERY applicant, but it is every applicant that applied by the merit scholarship deadline. i went through this last year and remember several people in the MICA '12 facebook group had talked to their admissions counselors about the term “scholarship finalist”

Yeah, so does not attending the open house lower chances?
I live in Illinois, and I’m pretty sure that my family won’t be able to go due to money.

yeah, i live in california…i was thinking the same too
my brother says, of course it’s usually better to go plus you’ll see the school

Maybe you should call and explain that it’s financially very difficult for you to fly from CA or Illinois, that you really want to go but can’t afford it. Though it would have to be transmitted to the right ears. I’m sure that it’s not a one to one correspondence - those who go get the scholarship, those who don’t, don’t - but I do think it may matter (they would never tell you that though). It stands to reason that this would be one factor–demonstrated interest. Remember, this year is very competitive because of the economy; more people than usual are asking for aid.

Would it be best to email Ama? I believe she’s the scholarship and aid director. I may try to keep a couple replies to show my interest to the school.

Did anyone get any grant/scholarship money from Ringling? If so, I am wondering what the maximum might be.

You would think that they would understand kids applying for financial aide can not afford the additional expense to come for a scholarship tour/lunch. The money it would take could be used toward tuition.

I don’t think they really care if you come to the acceptance days… but I could be wrong. I really don’t think it affects their decision, though. I mean how would the re-evaluate everyone who went to the open house in just 2 days so that they would have time to send out the papers for April 10th? I doubt they have the time to do all that.

Yes, Pratt has e-mailed scholarships – at least for early admittance applicants
