I was wondering if anyone knows if we are supposed to mail the recs or bring it in the audition. I am auditioning for U of Arts, Ithaca, Emerson, Point Park, Boston Conservatory, Syracuse, NYU, and Boston University.

I know for U of Arts and Ithaca they want them to be brought in at the time of the audition. And for BoCo I know to mail them. As for the others I am not too certain.
Also, is there a limit to how many artistic recs I should send them? I can't find this info anywhere on the school sites. Maybe I'm just not clicking at the right sections. If anyone could answer my questions I would greatly appreciate it!

Many schools do not specifically require them, but you can still send them to those schools.

If they don’t tell you to bring the recs to the audition, then they are mailed in.

In previous discussions of this topic (you could search the forum under “recommendations”), it has been stated that artistic recommendations should not exceed two.

When my son was applying to colleges, we only submitted what was asked for by the schools because we didn’t know any better. Fortunately, he was accepted by a couple of selective schools that he had not submitted artistic recommendations to.

If you are not sure what is required then give the school a call and ask them. I know that others have said to only give as many recs as the school asks for.

Thanks so much! I’ll be giving the schools a call to check on it.

I had to mail mine in to University of Hartford, University of Cincinnati, and University of Michigan. All my others don’t really talk about them. I’m going to bring them to my audition for: Boston Conservatory, University of Syracuse, Carnegie Mellon, and NYU.

Schools that want you to bring recs to an audition have a system for dealing with them at the time of the audition. Conceivably, someone looks over the recs at that time or very soon after.

(At one school where my son auditioned, a callback list was posted within a half hour of the end of the audition session. This was a school that had wanted artistic recommendation letters submitted at the audition. I’m not sure, but I suspect that the audition board glanced over the recs of the students they were most impressed with before they posted the very short callback list.)

Other schools would not, in all likelihood, be set up for dealing with recs at auditions.

I’m not saying your unsolicited recs would get lost if you handed them to someone when you were auditioning, but it would probably be safer – as well as more appropriate – to mail them to the school unless specifically directed otherwise.

Thanks NJTheatreMom!

theatrenerd10 I read somewhere on the NYU site they didn’t want artistic recs? Perhaps they just don’t want them mailed in? Also I thought BoCo wanted the recs online/through mail? I’ll probably bring hard copies of my artistic recs when I go in for my audition just in case. Thanks for listing your schools that you are bringing your recs to, it was really helpful.
