Fabre, If you intend to study art in college, then yes, absolutely, artistic talent is a plus. Colleges need students for their art departments as much as for their physics and English departments; however, some are stronger than others in studio art so you have to do your research. If you plan to major in another field, but are considering art studio as an adjunct this still applies. Colleges love multi-faceted kids and art certainly qualifies as an EC.

Ideally you should have both talent (skill) and accomplishment. Accomplishment doesnt necessarily mean that you have had a one-person show at MoMA. It could mean that youve taken courses, won awards, that your art instructors speak highly of you. Talent/skill is much, much more important in admissions. Ability to draw and experience in various media and handling materials is VERY important. Colleges are looking for kids that they can teach.

Most colleges give very specific instructions for submitting slide (not CD) portfolios. Check their websites. Its good to have a mix of media and to include a fair amount of drawing from life. Also, make sure that you have top quality slides (or consider getting a professional photographer).

Id recommend putting together an arts package which would include your slides; a resume that lists your courses and accomplishments including art-related employment or volunteering; a recommendation from an instructor; your essay on why this EC is important to you and any other material such as newspaper or magazine articles about shows. You should also write a short, one or two paragraphs, statement about your art, influences, philosophy what you hope to accomplish. Include descriptions of any foreign travel that included art activity. The Adcom will pass this to the art department who will evaluate your teachability.

Are you looking at art schools or at liberal arts colleges that offer studio art? If the latter, let me know the type of school youre interested in and I will give you some recommendations.
