i received an honorable mention for poetry....i applied early decision...should i notify the college about this award? is it worth anything or would it only matter to colleges if i was a finalist?

Congrats to you, Hellloooo!!

Yes, it is appropriate to send "updates" to schools where you have already filed an application and inform them of any new awards or significant activities since you filed the app. As far as the "worth" of the award.....I'm not saying it will get you into college but of course it is worthy! Any recognition in a national compeitition is worth mentioning! You were in the top 5% of those who entered for poetry, so it is an honor worth mentioning. Not just finalists! Do send it along and also include it in your RD apps in case you do not get in ED to your first choice school.

My D's out, which means that the winners of Jazz & Modern Dance are FRICKEN AMAZING! She has been winning nationally (and internationally) with her dancing for years, and always places in the top 5-10% of all senior entries with her solos, along with many titles. When I showed her the printout of her scores she laughed and said, your video taping S***s (no confidance problem there)! And she's right... it does! Let me tell you it DOES matter how the tape is edited, which I can now say with complete certainty! For those of you reading this to apply for next year, PM me if you want to know how NOT to do it :)

Most importantly, this proves that those who get honorables and runnerups, should be VERY happy and proud of their accomplishments, and should shout it from the roof-tops, call the press, and send postcards to all of their college prospects. Congratulations!

Thanks for posting the website link, just discovered D received an honorable mention for spoken/musical theater. I am just delighted for her.

Thanks for the heads-up that the scores are out there - my one applicant this year found out she got an honorable mention for spoken/musical theatre. She's disappointed (not being a diva, just nervous for all of her upcoming audition and scholarship outcomes) - so if anyone can share "great people get honorable mentions" stories, that would help her stay positive for her auditions. :) (I will share the stories already posted here, of course.)

Also - tell me how it works - does everyone who receive a 10 get invited to Florida? An earlier post on this thread said finalists aren't named yet - I'm just curious.

Congrats all!

I answered my own question by looking at the list of winners and picking out the names of students I know who are in great MT programs but got honorable mention and merit awards. :) I think my student should be really proud, but she is nerrrrvous about the whole process right now...you parents know how it is! :)

P.S. But I'm still curious about how people don't know if they're finalists if a score of 10 indicates that one is a finalist and the scores are already up...so as I said, if anyone can help me understand, that would be great! Thanks!!!

A friend of my D received a merit award last year in MT. She is currently a freshman at Michigan in MT and was also accepted to PSU and Syracuse. The only schools she applied to. So tell your student congratulations and not to worry!

Congratulations to all who have been recognized with ARTS awards and also to those who put in the considerable effort to apply. Melsmom is correct in assuming that the talent pool for this program is top notch so recognition really means a lot. I also want to remind those not familiar with the terminology in this competition that "Finalists" represent the top 1% of competitors (who total between 1000 - 1800 entries in 9 categories each year) and the competition is always heaviest in Instrumental Music, Voice and Theater. Whereas the designation of "Honorable Mention" in many other competitions may be behind the Grand Prize, First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth places, in the NFAA competition Honorable Mention (top 5% of entries) is only one step below the Finalists and the Merit Award (top 10%) is only a step behind that. In addition, in several categories, where there are multiple disciplines under one category (e.g., instrumental music where there may be only one finalist per instrument or in Voice, where there are no more than 1-2 finalists per vocal range) an Honorable Mention award places you somewhere in the top 2-15 places NATIONALLY!! against very stiff competition.

So bravo and brava to all who entered, to the teachers who have worked so hard to help these young artists prepare and last, but of course not least, to the parents who support and encourage their talented children to pursue these dreams. You should all be so very proud!

Thanks for the great info, theatermom and dancemom! :) I know the student of whom you speak, dancemom, and she is GRRRREAT! :)

P.S. Can you tell this is the 1st year I've had a student apply for this award? Now I'll know for future years...so thanks to all!

Coach C,

Saw your post after posting mine so I hope my "stats" re Honorable Mention signifigance prove helpful and encouraging. Also, you may know this already, but my D, a sophomore MT at UM, was an Honorable Mention winner in Voice in 2004 (there is more than one road to MT......) and two other current UM MT sophomores were Honorable Mention winners in 2005 - one in Voice and one in Spoken/Musical Theater. Your student should relax and be thrilled!! Congrats to her and you!

CoachC,
Assure your student that an honorable mention is a great success, and can open doors to many interesting opportunities in the future. ANY type of ARTS award, from merit to ultimate big money winners, are offered the same opportunities for scholarships and furthur training. Each year the Utah Shakespearean Festival ( a Tony winner for best regional theatre ) offers a 12 week internship to two ARTS winners through a video application. Previous interns have been merit, honorable mention, finalists, and final winners of theatre and music theatre categories. My D has worked two seasons with this wonderful company and has learned a HUGE amount, made great contacts, and was also able to put away a nice chunk of money. It is also a nice addition to a resume. Congrats to your student and to you as well for your part in the training and preparation!

Thanks for the link that the award numbers are out.

My D got an Honorable Mention for Spoken/Musical Theatre.

We just came back from NYU - she audtioned ED there with the Advanced Dance audition. I'll put that all on another thread.

janenw

When my D tried to check her scores it told her to put in her number beiginning with a 05, and of course all this year's entries should start with 06 - did anyone else have the same problem.? It did not recognize her ID #.

it does start witha six

I also am confused. Why will the finalists' be notified on December 1st. Aren't their scores reflecting a "10" and thus they know they will be going to Miami?

CoachC-did you say you viewed the list of winners? If so, how did you find it. Please share if you can.

Also, does anyone know if NFAA will announce how many students competed in each category?

Thanks and good luck to all!

Are any of the other award recepients agreeable to posting their material?
I would love to know what others did, if you feel you can share.

Again thanks for the congratulations and congrats to all the other winners.

xxx,Mary Anna

Sorry for the confusion - I looked at last year's list of winners.

But I don't know the answer to the "finalists have not yet been named" mystery - I, too, thought if someone sees a score of 10, they are a finalist.

Momof2006, my student had the same problem - you have to put in 06, then the first 6 numbers of her ID, such as 000*** (for my student, it was that). The last 3 numbers are the ones you don't use. The site kind of explains that, but my student was still a bit confused, as was I, initially.

usually the person receiving an award finds out before the public does...i know this is how scholastic is done as well as any other competition i have entered

The link has been disabled, my guess is that they do not want the information available before the scheduled 12/1 announcement.

I guess I'm a day late. Try to pull up the link and it didn't work. Congrats to all those who received an award. I guess we have to wait until the 1st.
