I'm a entering freshman at USC and I got assigned to Arts & Humanities Residential College at Parkside. From what I researched the building and dorms are nice and that while it is social it is more concentrated on studies. I also heard that it is isolated. How hard is it going to be to make friends and how far is my dorm going to be from my classes???? Do you guys know how many minutes by walking it would take to reach my classes???

feel free to comment if you are a entering freshman and are going to be living in Arts & Humanities Residential College at Parkside :)

Our D will be living at Arts and Humanities Parkside. She’s looking forward to the suite style, and is definately social. She just likes a little balance. With a little effort you can make friends, join clubs, etc.

It is very easy to make friends as a freshman as most people are friendly and are willing to meet new people.

It would take you about 10 min walking to the furthest possible class you would possibly have, but most are closer and would take less time. Many people have bikes or longboards which cuts the travel time in half.

bump… I know that there are a lot of freshman living in Arts and Humanities. Just any tips or anything about this dorm will be appreciated.

One question that I have is if there is a gym near this dorm and what college cafeteria is near this dorm.

I loved living at Parkside!

There is a gym in IRC, very small, like two treadmills, two ellipticals, and two bikes, I think that’s it. Parkside Cafe is also in IRC, which is right next door to Arts & Humanities.

I really enjoyed Parkside because it was nice and quiet. My roommate and I were and are best friends, so I always had her, which was nice, but it wasn’t crazy or anything (no one setting the toilet on fire, for example…). I also had a social infrastructure outside of the dorm (that is, my sorority), so it was nice to have the Row and my friends there, but then have a calmer place to spend the night.

I walked everywhere freshman year and didn’t mind it. Sophomore year, when I moved off-campus, I got a bike, and I don’t know how I functioned without it. You’ll be fine either way, though.

There is both Parkside Restaurant and small exercise room located next door at the International Residential College at Parkside (IRC).

If you want full exercise equipment, then the Lyon center is less than a 10 min walk away.

wisdomsomehow thank you for all your input. I was really glad that I got put in Arts and Humanities but the one thing that I worried about was making friends. Since traditional style dorms are very opened and easy to make friends I thought living in Arts and HUmanities would cause me to have a hard time making friends. Also from what people have told me even though the Arts and Humanities dorm is far from classes it is not to far and you can make it to all your classes and the distance is not that big of a deal. Is this true??

4orce did you live in the Arts and Humanities dorm too?

You should be able to make it everywhere in less than 15 min, most places in less than 10 min. Many students have bikes and that cuts travel time to less than 5 min to anywhere.

It is really not a big deal to walk as the campus is fairly compact.

Yeah, I did for one year.

during like welcome week and before classes start, try walking out your schedule (e.g. from parkside to your first class on Monday, then to your second Monday class, etc) and get an idea for how long it takes to get from place to place. Then add in about five extra minutes in case something goes awry, and that’s how much time you should budget to get to your classes.

With A&H I think you need to be a bit more gregarious to make friends. Most of the people I know were closest with people in their suite out of their dorm friends, and then also made other friends through classes, activities, etc. There were some groups of friends who were brought together by living on the same floor or whatever, but not so many as in like New/North or Birnkrant.

a virtual tour of the Double-8P-Suite for the Arts and Humanities is finally available!!! This is the first virtual tour that is available for a Arts and HUmanities dorm.
