Hey guy! I'll be applying to ND this fall and I'm planning on taking the route of majoring in Political Science with a minor in Finance. What is the arts & letters school like? I've been told that a&l majors have it easier than the others.

From what I’ve heard from current students, A&L students have considerably more free time than certain other kids (Science and Engineering). This should give you plenty of time to spend on clubs, sports, or other activities.

Science and engineering is geared to tests. A&L is reading and paper intensive. B school is probably the easiest in the sense that there are many group projects. But each school is going to demand plenty of your time. Work hard, play hard is the norm but you would be foolish to think any of the colleges is going to be a walk in the park!

I second all the statements from the other two posters. Arts and Letters kids have a very different kind of work than Science kids (me) do. I will be in lab for three hours for Orgo whereas the A&L kid will be reading throughout the week that much and more. Science and Engineering kids notoriously rip on the A&L kids, though, because they do tend to have a little less work than the Sci-Eng’s do.

Okay!! Makes sense! With foreign language, I’m going to be in IB Spanish 4 this fall. I do love Spanish but I’d like to explore other languages as well. Id actually like to take beginner French and work my way up in college. Is that possible at ND?

What are the math requirements for arts & letters? Does finite math count as a class toward those requirements?

Awilo- You can start a new language if like! Definitely take the IB or AP test though because you can get a ton of credit at ND from language exams! But I know a lot of people who decided to start afresh with a new language when they got here and even more who chose to study more than one language! A lot of what you can/can’t do depends on how many credits you enter with and how many majors/minors you have. There is also a Romance Language major for people who chose to study 2 or more Romance Languages.

Franko- You can pretty much take anything! Because of this, I advise taking a non-calc class! There is no reason to put yourself through calc for no reason! I took Finite (super easy and wonderful) and Business Stats (which was actually rather tough).

Let me know if you have other questions!

Thanks for answering. I just finished Finite Math, if it transfers would I need any other math? I emailed hopefully they can clarify before I apply as a transfer.

thank you!!

There is no minor in Finance. There is a supplementary minor that encompasses the different majors offered by Mendoza. Business has it the “easiest”, but A&L has the most flexible scheduling.

Oh okay. Thanks!!

Arts & Letters…

a.k.a. “Arts & Crafts” or “Arts & Parties”
