arts program at ucla--***?

I am very VERY confused as to how my friend with a 3.3 gpa and 1600/2400 SAT and 26 ACT score got into UCLA....she applied through the arts program (i dont know specifics about this program) at ucla....and i really dont understand how she got in...she knew UCLA was a definite reach for her so she applied to this particular school...i know others who were well-qualifed who got rejected...would anyone be able to explain this?!?

she got a 5 on her portfolio last year for AP studio art (photography to be exact..)..but her grades weren't amazing (a couple C's last year...), i really just dont understand...

Students are accepted into the department based upon evidence of creative talent and academic achievement. A faculty committee recommends admission decisions. Successful candidates must also meet eligibility requirements for the University of California.

Admissions to Department of Art, UCLA Arts

The process is different through SAA. All things aside, there is stiff competition to get into SAA as an arts major.

...yes...but it just doesnt make sense lol..oh well, good things happen to good people !

yeah i know . . . music , arts, nursing, and engineering (to a lesser degree) have different requirements from the run-of-the-mill college of letters&science. . . hard to separate them when they're all branded UCLA . . .

i'd guess that they place more weight on your portfolio/audition than they do on your "stats".

yup...apparently :/

it just sucks because i regret not doing the same...i'm also in ap studio art and have been working on my portfolio...it just sucks knowing i had a better chance going through that..then applying to college of arts/sciences...

but then again UCLA was never a top choice for me..it was only a "dream school" after finding out i actually had a chance of getting into this really great school through the arts program haha

it's not like people use SAA as a backdoor to ucla . . . it's a really tough school to get into . . . and the people i know there are extremely talented . . .

vtec that shouldve been obvious, though those stats are pretty low, even for arts.

Maybe her portfolio was amazing? It ain't easy. Stats don't show everything about a person.

In terms of competition it is very competitive. As far as music goes, when I applied last year there were 50+ composition major applicants and only 8 were accepted. For viola freshmen there are only 2 (including me) and 1 2nd year transfer.

imagine if that was you fighting for a seat in a class of 8 (or 2 or 3) in the college of letters & science. Point is don't be so quick to judge just based on stats.

in my opinion....ive seen better...but who knows, her work got her a 5 on the ap last year lol

but her portfolio obviously overshadowed her "stats"....

i'm tempted to appeal and some how get into the arts category and let them see my work but a)dont think that would work haha and b)idk if my stats are strong enough..

and idk..getting a rejection kind of does something to you lol

lol well i dono what to say then

and yea i dont think appeals work that way lol.. it'd be like looking over a test to see if you can do it or not before telling the teacher you're too sick to take it

haha well put

but that'd be great if it actually worked haha...and i def was at UCLA yesterday randomly, just seeing what i would be missing out on lol

same exact thing happened to a girl at my school. 1840 sat, 3.7 weighted gpa, no ec's, owned all the asian people who tried so hard to get in and got rejected.
