Arts Requirement for non-arts majors?

I'm interested in applying to UC schools this year. I am an out-of-state applicant.

I noticed on their website that there is an arts requirement in their "a-g course requirements." My schedule has never accommodated for an arts class because I have always taken business, social science, or journalism electives, even though I am a painter and a musician out of school. Is this something that others have run into? Is this something that could prevent me from applying to UC schools. I am just surprised by it, at least at my school a large number of students do not take arts electives and rather choose from my school's other offerings as I mentioned above.

I appreciate any input!
Thank you,
SuePer

FROM THE UC WEBSITE: A-G courses | UC Admissions

F) Visual and performing arts

UC-approved high school courses

One yearlong course of visual and performing arts chosen from the following: dance, drama/theater, music or visual art

AP or IB Examination

Score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP History of Art, Studio Art or Music Theory Exam;
score of 5, 6 or 7 on any one IB HL exam in Dance, Film, Music, Theatre Arts or Visual Arts

College courses

Grade of C or better in any transferable course of 3 semester (4 quarter) units that clearly falls within one of four visual/performing arts disciplines: dance, drama/theater, music or visual art

You might still be eligible under “Admission by Exam” or ask for an exception as described in “Admission by Exception”. But, assuming you are at a school that offers all of the a-g requirements, it is likely that your application will be looked at more favorably if you actually complete the a-g requirements.

If you’re a musician, why don’t you take the AP music theory exam or the AP studio art (though that’s a lot of work).
