Arts & Sciences Interfaculty

I'm curious: Anyone else applying to this?

What are your reasons for subjecting yourself to this freakishly hard path? Other than some innate masochism, of course.

If you are accepted, do you have any idea what your two majors will be? (First person to say, "An art major and a science major," will absolute not receive a cookie.)

I applied without knowing the acceptance rate...lol

and I cant think of a reason why...so whats urs skramata?

i agree with rohan. i had no clue about the acceptance rate, i just needed another faculty to apply to.

Haha, I'm in almost the same situation! I knew that it was extremely difficult to get into, but 5%? I was really shocked.

Although I'm a bit stronger in the maths and sciences, I'm a very "general" type of person. I'm one of those people who, despite knowing it's extremely unrealistic, want to do a foreign language, a social science, a math, a science, and an english/writing class every single semester for four years.

Since it's doubtful I could actually pull that off, I'll do the next best thing and major in two wildly different areas. Plus, I like being at that satisfied level of stressed out.

I have a question: I didn't realize Interfaculty existed back when I applied, but now I'm highly interested in studying cognitive sciences.

Is there any way I can transfer in later on? Or reapply?

Thanks :)

some people might want to cyber-punch me for asking, but why does the A&S thing exist? is it just like a dual major program?
seems fun now to just apply and see if i could get in :P

hahaha. i seriously have been thinking the same thing, i just see it as a crappy "honors" alternative. i really want to see if anyone on collegeconfidential gets in!

Sorry, tako, but I have no idea. Anyone else know?

Why did they create this interfaculty? Were McGill students not allowed to dual major previously? Or are their perks for being a student in the program?

Good luck, everyone! I feel like we're going to be waiting a long, long time before we learn whether or not we get in.

Hehe I found it.

Inter-Faculty Transfer Procedures

Yay! I guess this way I can change my mind. At the very least, I get a less hectic year than all of y'all ;)

ahhh..I dont want to wait! If u applied to 2 different faculties( sciences and A&S), do u find out the results seprately or on the same day?
and if someone is denied by just A&S, is he/she considered for both the faculty of arts and the faculty of science afterwards?
sorry for bothering u guys with these questions....

rohan115: You applied to the Faculty of Sciences and the Interfaculty of Arts & Science, right? If you are denied access to the Interfaculty, you will be considered for admission into the normal Science Faculty.

If someone is denied admission into A&S, they are considered for their second choice faculty. You are not considered for both the Arts Faculty and Science Faculty.

(... I'm pretty sure this information is right.)

As you may know, my daughter is in her third year of the A&S program and is doing very well. Her two majors are Humanities and Psychology. The A&S program started about five/six years ago, but was limited to transfers in from upper class students. It was started at the request of students who wanted a program that allowed a choice of a greater range of classes. The program became so popular that three years ago (my daughters admission year) McGill decided to make the A&S faculty open to first-year students.

If you read the minutes of admission committee meetings on the McGill website, you will see that McGill was "stunned" by the number of applicants the first year. So many applied for the few slots that high quality applicants who were not admitted were automatically transferred to Arts or Sciences Faculties for consideration, even if they had not applied to those faculties specifically.

Rolling admissions just started last year--previously all applicants heard about all faculties on the same day; so I do not know if decisions will be posted simultaneously.

A&S is a ridiculous amount of work and my daughter studies five hours or so a day. She has a 3.7 GPA, so it is possible, but the first two years with required science lab courses are a killer. However, there are several special courses for A&S students, although the large majority are the standard courses in other faculties. The dual major does allow the student to choose from a wider range of interests. Incidentally, I understand that McGill has been tracking the first-year A&S class and finds their GPA is .5 higher than the average student.

Hope this helps.

mcgilldad: Thank you so much! That was really helpful and rather interesting.

Thanks for the info Skramata and mcgill dad.
It would have been cool if they considered us for both the faculties of Arts and sciences after being denied for A&S...

rohan: I believe that acceptance to A&S and any other faculty is completely independent. My daughter applied both to A&S and Arts and was accepted to both. She could have attended either. That is why I always recommend prospective students apply to two faculties-- you can always transfer after year zero if you dont get into the one you have your heart set on ( provided your gpa is okay.)

Hey guys, my friend and I got into the interfaculty arts and science, and we were wondering if the program allowed for a little bit of flexibility in course selection. For those who have kids in the program, did your kids find it kind of hard to remain focused on their degree requirements if they took some electives they wanted to take?

I was scouring through the acceptances thread and I hardly found any mention of the program! I thought nobody had applied!

blindhope, can u tell us ur stats ? and maybe also ur friend's stats?

No problem. Since McGill really only cares about stats and not extracurriculars, I'll just only put stats. good luck to all you guys who applied! I hope I see you guys next school year.

Mine:
US High school
3.93 (uw); 4.70 (weighted- AP and adv/honors=5), which includes 1st semester senior year.
School doesn't rank, but top 5%.
SAT: 2260 (750 CR, 730 M, 780 W)
SAT II: Chem-790; Math 2- 800; US history- 730
ACT: 34
5 on all APs taken (English lang, US history, World History, Chemistry, Psych, US government)
Current classes: AP Spanish Lang, AP English lit, AP biology, AP Physics C, AP calc BC, Software design, intern-science (at a local research institute).

Friend:
GPA is higher because she's valedictorian. She goes to another school. Her SAT was 2190, didn't take the ACT, got 800s on both the math II and the Bio SAT IIs and 750 on French. She's taking AP English lit, AP French lit, AP chem, AP psych, multivariable calc, AP European history, and health.

Also, could someone answer my previous question? Thanks in advance! McGill is an awesome school and I would really love to attend, I guess it boils down to how the coursework bureaucracy there works

Oh, and I applied to the faculty of science as well. I found out about both decisions on the same day last week, on Thursday, apparently the same day they got my midyear reports from my school.

those are amazing stats....so that gives me no hope...lol.
I just hope that my A&S decision doesnt slow down my F of sciences decision...
