Arts supplement

I’m planning to submit a photography portfolio based on my AP portfolio. (got a 4.) Any chance this could hurt me?

They are looking for especially strong portfolios. Keep in mind, a member of the art department’s faculty will be evaluating your artwork, not the admissions officer. With that in mind, if you feel that your work is strong enough then go for it.

I’ll tell you this though, the people who grade the AP portfolios are mostly college professors. With that said, it would be unlikely that the faculty at Amherst will have a very different opinion about your artwork than the AP board. Remember, a “4” portfolio won’t hurt you, but I can’t say that it will really knock their socks off.

If you actually think your stuff is good, go ahead and send it. A kid in my art class last year got a 1 on the AP test but got into RISD and some other great art schools.

And even if your work actually sucks, submitting a portfolio can’t really hurt you. If the art profs don’t like your work, admissions will just disregard the submission, not count it against you.

I’m planning to submit a photography supplement too…but I’m worried about the drawing requirement (likewise, haha). Ummmmmmm I have like no drawings…so I’ll have to do them…

[Flickr: Yvette Chen’s Photostream](Yvette | Flickr) is it worth it? (most of this work is old)

^^ i’m planning to submit one too(photography+oil painting), and i’d advise you to make a site showcasing only your best works. They don’t have time to trawl through pages and pages of photos. A site with a page of your best works, or pages divided on the basis of themes, might be a better idea.
Some of your photos are really nice :)

Ps what drawing requirement?
All the best :)

haha yeah i’m definitely not sending them my flickr account! i’m doing like 15 photos + 3 drawings. do you have any advice for an acceptable site where i can upload my work? it says here… Information about Arts Supplements | First-Year Applicants | Amherst College;

“4) CD or URL for a website, with examples of your work, including at least three drawings.”
