Arts Supplement

I play the flute reasonably well. Unless you submit the arts supplement, would the admissions board not consider your talent ? In other words, is an arts supplement required to demonstrate your talent?

Yes, unless you have awards to put on your resume an arts supplement is the only way to show the admissions officers your artistic ability

“I play the flute reasonably well.”

It really depends on how you define “reasonably well.” Remember, very talented high school musicians who may have performed at Carnegie Hall, San Francisco Philharmonic etc (think Yo-Yo Ma) will also be applying to colleges with their arts supplement – and your supplement is going to be directly compared to theirs. If your don’t play exceptionally well – with demonstrated awards or performances – your supplement may do you more harm than good. Yale probably has the best advice on this topic: [Supplementary Materials | Yale College Admissions](Supplementary Materials | Yale College Undergraduate Admissions)

“You should think carefully before submitting supplementary materials with your Yale College application. Most successful applicants submit only the items that we require. There are cases in which too many submissions, or submissions that do not reflect a high level of talent, can actually work against a candidate. Because the Admissions Committee gives greatest weight to the documents required of all applicants, we recommend that you focus your energy primarily on those elements of the application.”
