So, I've been looking into a lot of creative and artsy schools such as skidmore and vassar, but like most colleges the price tag makes me shy away. Ofcourse I will apply, but I wanted to learn about SUNY schools that had a similar environment-just in case. So...Which sung schools have the best artsy and intellectual environment? I really liked SUNY New Paltz. Any suggestions?

oh, and my GPA is a 3.7, I have an ACT score of 28 (I'm going to actually study for the next time and hopefully increase my score). I do drama and other clubs outside of school.

Definitely New Paltz (or Purchase, but that school has a really depressing campus/location). I’m a freshman at New Paltz, and almost all of my friends make art or play music in some form or another, and it’s a really nice creative vibe on campus. If you have any questions (about academics/dorm/social life/etc.) feel free to ask me here or in a PM!

Agree with Geneseo, New Paltz. But if you have the background, the number one school you might want to consider is Fashion Institute of Technology. If is a SUNY and, unlike many that tend to be generic public colleges or universities far from the quality of flagships in other states, FIT is quite good and well respected in certain specialty areas.

I would agree mostly with new paltz. great school.

ever thought about any schools in burlington, vermont (UVM, saint michael’s college, champlain)? Definitely a very artsy/creative/liberal environment, and you would probably get a good amount of merit money to go to any of those schools; and if you get your act score up (which i assume you will, because i originally got a 28 without studying then got a 31 with studying) then you would get even more.

Purchase has done quite a bit of renovation lately so things are looking up. OK, Purchase is not an exciting town, but NYC is accessible. All Purchase students write a senior thesis with mentoring by a faculty member. It’s a pretty special experience and not available at every state institution. Purchase conservatory programs for theater, film, art and music are extremely selective and recruit very talented students.

Depends what kind of “artsy” you are into. Geneseo’s entire environment and populous has a VERY intellectual vibe, but not very artsy in my opinion.

I agree with everyone else and say new paltz, the town is very hip/artsy/young as well. I would also say Purchase. A friend of mine goes there and she loves it. They also throw amazing parties.

You say the word artsy and the first thing that comes into my head is New Paltz.
I live 10 minutes from SUNY NP and visit the town almost once a week to do some studying at the library or at a cafe or just hang with friends. I can’t speak on Geneseo or Purchase but I most definitely can say New Paltz has got artsy, philosophical, and individualized spraypainted across the entire campus.
Addendum, however: New Paltz is known as being “intellectual” in the sense that creativity often eclipses preconceived notions or ideas. That being said, while it is one of the most competitive colleges in the system, Geneseo and Purchase also have big names for being home to some very intelligent students, giving the air of the latter having more dedicated, passionate, and perhaps involved or motivated students.
