I've been accepted into CAS for Philosophy, but I have some concerns over about the type of students that make up the majority population at Pitt.

From what I've been reading, the population seems to be quite homogeneous (jocks), and I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight into the cultural diversity? Is there an artistic/hipster/intellectual population? Or will I spend my weekends drinking and watching sports....
Thanks :)

Can’t answer about hipsters and artsy types but my son is not a jock, not much of a sports fan at all and is having the time of his life at Pitt.

Hey KantDecide (nice name btw),

I can not answer your question concerning the artsy/hipster population. However, if I’m accepted into Pitt I will also be majoring in Philosophy. Do you have a facebook? Mabye we could get to know each other?

I would describe my DD as an academic and she has had no trouble finding friends.

MD Mom and DonnaMom- that is good to hear, thank you.

quickuser99- Sure! Feel free to PM me.

Are there any current students who could comment on this? I know Pitt isn’t NYU, but I’d like to be around other students who also enjoy film, traveling, reading, thinking, etc…For my major, Pitt is an excellent school but the social scene (from what I’ve read) is the only thing holding me back.

hopefully you can visit Pitt to get a feel for the student body- I believe they have some admitted student days planned

I have visited Pitt campus with my D who is accepted and is deciding between Pitt and Penn State. To me Pitt seemed much more diverse in comparison to Penn State which has more of the party/jock vibe that you describe. There did not seem to be any overwhelming “type” at Pitt.

IMHO Pittsburgh would be a good place for an artsy student because there is lots of culture available in the city. Pitt is a challenging school academically and if you want to seek out even more challenge you can enroll in honors courses whether or not you are in the honors college - as long as you keep your GPA up.

I have heard that Pitt has a great Philosophy department. I’m sure that you would find like minded people in your major there.

Good luck in your decision. Which other school are you considering vs. Pitt?

You probably already know about PittArts
[PITT ARTS : University of Pittsburgh](<a href=“PITT ARTS | Student Affairs”>http://www.pittarts.pitt.edu/)

my D is very much as you describe; she likes indie music & film, coffee, art, bike scene. she is considering pitt seriously.

Hi,

I’m a peer advisor at Pitt. My main job is to answer academic-related questions but as a current student, I can offer some insight into plenty of other things!

Trust me when I say that you will have no trouble finding artsy/hipster people at Pitt…or anyone else. Basically, Pitt has every single type of student with every single type of personality you could imagine. I can easily say it’s one of the most diverse campuses i’ve ever be on. I transferred here from another school a few years back and I went on countless college tours so I saw what was out there and nothing compared to Pitt as far as diversity went. I think being in/around a city has a lot to do with that.

But, and this probably goes without saying, to meet people and make friends you have to put in the effort! They won’t drop into your lap.

Also if you’re interested in philosophy…Pitt is a great choice for you. I’m sure you’ve heard this numerous times but our philosophy dept. is top-notch.

Hope this helps! Let me know if I can help with anything else.
