Artsy schools needed

My son wants to get a BFA in Acting. He also plays guitar, sings, does improv comedy, etc.. We are looking for an artsy school that won't cost a fortune (or that is generous with talent and/or merit aid). His stats are top 25% of his class with a ~1350 or so Math/Reading SAT. He wants to stay on the East Coast and has lately been making overtures that a warm weather location might be appealing. Any thoughts? We also need to identify schools that may have a strong BA theatre program as backups. Are there some standout artsy state schools (e.g. UNC Greensboro)? Thanks.

Well, not exactly warm, but SUNY Purchase is cheap. And his stats pretty much would assure him admission to the school if not to the BFA program, which requires an audition.

NC School for the Arts is one to consider. My son is a theatre minor at Catawba College near Charlotte - it has a great theatre and music dept. Private college, but reasonable tuition, gives talent and merit aid, too.

Here’s a link to Purchase’s Conservatory of Theater Arts and Film.

Even colder, but also a SUNY and cheap is the University of Buffalo.

KLH – thanks. Catawba popped up as a possibility… What is the area like? My son would prefer a bustling arts community… BTW – he has a friend who is a BFA Acting Major at NCSA.

Hudson – thanks, Purchase is on the list. Probably not Buffalo though…

Check over on the Specialized Majors>Theatre/Drama Major forum for tons of information on BFA Acting. BFA Acting programs require an audition and are VERY competitive.

Outside of the college, I wouldn’t describe Salisbury as a bustling arts community. But my son goes to Charlotte and Asheville on the weekends for shows, so there are some nearby options.

FSU has a great BFA acting program (and BFA musical theatre), and it’s in Florida. So there’s good quality + warm for you. And I believe the tuition isn’t that bad…I’m sure there are scholarships.

Look at University of the Arts. It is just what its name states plus provides a decent exposure to liberal arts. Every student’s major is arts or communications/arts related. While a bit pricey, UArts is also very generous with talent/merit aid.

Thanks jy9as91 and MichaelNKat-- FSU and UArts are definitely on the list.

Thanks klh720 – my son thinks he’s a city boy so the NC suburbs may be a tough sell…

UNCSA
Purchase
Boston University can give scholarships to those who display great talent!
DePaul also gives scholarships for merit and academic talent!
NYU can also give generously (although that is pretty rare, I think…some people boast it on these forums, but it is still rare)
