I realize that American U. is a hot spot for kids who are into politics/policy and relatively career focused, but is there also a portion of the kids who are dressing a bit more trendy/edgy (superficial as that may be, but it is one way of describing people), going out to hear indie music and art museums in the city and aren’t sure what they want to be when they grow up? What I generally read on the website makes it look like these kids don’t exist at AU…but I hope I am wrong!
Although I can’t speak for the student population at AU since I’m not a current student, I think I can confidently say that not everybody there is some sort of political science robot competing for the best internships. There are people for everyone.
@cellomom7 - First, I too am a cello mom! My D is very “alternative” and musical (she plays 4 instruments) and is definitely into alternative music - she goes to a lot of concerts and that is one thing that’s important to her when choosing a college, that there is a good local/national music scene. She has been accepted to AU into SIS. We’re waiting to hear from 2 more schools, but of the schools she’s been accepted to, AU is her top choice. I think AU attracts all types of students and everyone has the ability to find their place and friend group through all the clubs available. Good luck to your son/daughter.
@thequeenmum- Thanks for your reply. I am sure you are correct…my daughter wouldn’t have loved otherwise, but I haven’t been there yet. She is in the University College and will start out as a music major. Did your daughter audition at AU for music scholarship?
Hi -
My S is also very musical and is seriously considering Kogod Business and Entertainment and Audio Production. However, he don’t do no cellos, only metal, progressive rock, fusion, etc. But, he may be on campus in the fall!!
No, she didn’t apply for music scholarships - didn’t know that was an option for non-majors. We haven’t been to campus yet either, but are visiting next weekend. Right now, it’s her top choice, sight unseen. Truthfully, AU was a last minute application for her and we didn’t think too much about it since she hadn’t shown much interest. She is registering for University College today - she needs to finalize her top 3 seminars, but probably Religion without Boarders, Cross Cultural Communications and Why They Love/Hate Us. How about your D? My D say’s she want’s to be your D’s friend! haha!
@Cameron121 - “he don’t do no cellos” Love that! Tell your son to ROCK on!
@thequeenmum thought I answered you but apparently it didn’t go through! My daughter is in US Society. What seminar did your child end up getting into?
As a student that is going to be attending AU in the fall and also University College (Western Philosophy), AND as a student interested in Political Science/History, I can safely say that, yes, these students do exist in AU. And, even if they didn’t, they definitely exist in DC. A great location for concerts and a thriving rock scene was really important for me when making my college decision. I know that on the first floor of the Katzen Arts Center, there’s a few soundproof music rooms one can practice in provided that it’s not in use. Great for any musically inclined student.
@cellomom7 Sorry - haven’t been on lately. She is in the music appreciation seminar.
My S (who will be an SIS freshman this fall) has participated in a musical theater production each year since middle school, and choral music at school and church, and may seek out those things at AU, but his true passion is emerging: musical political satire in the style of The Capitol Steps and here in NY, the Legislative Correspondents’ annual production. Hoping there might be opportunities for him to pursue that interest at AU.
