I got my acceptance letter from Wake friday and it's definitely one of my top choices. My only concern is the reputation for being so conservative, even compared to other schools in the south. For those of you who know more about Wake than I do, what's your opinion on this? Thank you.

Here is the thing:
Wake Forest is “conservative” compared to other four-year institutions in the United States. This is even more evident, when compared against its peer (ie: top 50) schools. The only other school I would consider as “conservative” would be Notre Dame. This is because, colleges are generally liberal places.

Compared to America as a whole, I would say Wake Forest is very moderate. We have very active Democratic, Republican, and Libertarian organizations on campus. Hell, I have seen Spike Lee, John Edwards, Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, Sandra Day O’Connor (and even Ron Paul, Kenneth Starr, and John McCain) on campus.

I am a registered Democrat from New Jersey, and I have loved the political climate at Wake Forest. This is particularly in regards to my classes, where I don’t appreciate professors shoving their views (be they liberal, conservative, whatever) down my throat. An overall moderate political climate, allows you to interact with people with all different viewpoints and is just great for making you critically think about your beliefs.

I certainly have been able to define myself as more than a “Democrat” since I have been at Wake Forest. But coming as someone, who is an Obama-loving Yankee, I could not be concerned!

I, like willmingtonwave, am a registered Democrat in NJ. Wake is definiiiitely a conservative school, but people are more likely to ask you why your views are the way they are instead of criticizing you. I chose between Wake & NYU, and a big plus for NYU for me was that it was more liberal.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got to Wake and found a surprising number of moderates and liberals. The school is mostly conservative, but you will not feel alone.

I agree with everything willmingtonwave said.
