Anyone know if Fordham is as good as NYU? I applied to NYU, but I'm pretty much positive I don't have a snowball's chance in hell, so I'm looking at Fordham now, does anyone know much about it?

This is also in regard to the Lincoln campus

NYU is more prestigious than FU, and also much more difficult to get accepted into. It's also more expensive, too.

I also applied to both schools, but I haven't heard back from either. I'm pretty confident about FU, though.

What are your specific questions? Maybe I can help, I've done a lot of reasearch...

One of the things that influenced my decision upon choosing Fordham over NYU, was the opinion of a well-respected teacher. She recieved her PHd from NYU and taught there for a few years, after which she took a position at Fordham. She told me that NYU is really just about making money. Sure, it's prestigious, but the faculty isn't nearly as involved in a student's college experience, like at Fordham. She said that a dean once said to her, "if it's a warm body, we'll take it." Personally, I'd rather be a name, and a face, rather than a social security number.

Nonetheless, I attend a small high school, and I thrive on individualized attention. I'm choosing the school that fits me best, and that's what all of you should do, as well. We'd all love to have Princeton or NYU on our diplomas--but I think that the journey leading up to my graduation should mean a hell of a lot more.

Thanks for your input, I think I may go ahead and finish applying to fordham.

gstano: Do you have any information about the strength and quality of Fordham's biology/science programs? Also, any profiles of students who got their merit scholarhips? Thanks.

Yes Fordham is as good as NYU, maybe better in some ways, particularly the LC campus which is smaller and allows for more individualized attention. If you want insight from an "old" person, I lived in NYC for a good part of my life, went to Hunter College - CUNY (couldn't afford anything else). Back then -- '70s -- Columbia was THE NY school to go to, Fordham, however, was next. NYU was referred to as NYZoo, and had zero reputation, except for the film school, which even then was considered among the best. Since then, obviously, they have put the PR machine into overdrive and have successfully created a reputation for themselves. Good for them. But, Fordham remains well thought of not just on the East Coast, but the rest of the country, too. I'm not sure the same can be said for NYU. Smart, ambitious people can apply to Fordham with confidence that if they get in they will be getting as good an education as they would get at NYU.

mystified- that was well put !

I've been attending Fordham U for almost a year now; I transferred from Miami Dade College. Fordham really does offer individualize attention to its students. My dean knows me and just about everyone else by name - which may or may not be a good thing =)

The classes are really challenging, and the professors are always there to help you when you need them, well, most.

I remember in my old college how much of a mission it was to get anything that had to do with paperwork done (beuracracy). Not here, there are so many resources at the disposal of every students, I hardly ever find myself waiting for anything on campus. Thus far I love the school, and all the experiences I live on a daily basis. Im happy I decided to come here for my undergrad, my other choice was Columbia but I couldnt afford it.

That's my 2cents =)

It sounds like a great school... I hope I'm accepted now. I'm not familiar with the NY area, I'm from Maryland... does anyone know which area of the city Fordham is in? Like I heard NYU was in Greenwich Village

Universitas Fordhamensis Rocks!!!

One more question, how are the dorms? There weren't any pictures of the linoln campus dorms online

I'm pretty sure that there is only one on--campus dorm building at Lincoln Center.

Don't quote me on that.

i mean quality-wise

I have no idea, darling.

Where in Maryland? My S applied to Fordham LC and is waiting to hear, we also live in MD. Although as I said in my earlier post I'm from NYC originally. LC campus is in Manhattan, near Lincoln Center. That's on the West Side. Very nice area!

From Fort Washington, Maryland... nobody's every heard of it apparently :D It's a few miles from DC and Bethesda

Okay, sorry If I'm getting annoying, I have one more question:
How's the campus look? All I saw on the site were pictures of Rosehill, which were gorgeous, but not too many pictures of lincoln campus.

We have a D at the Lincoln Center campus, and the dorm, McMahon Hall is beautiful. The entire dorm is apartment/suite-style, usually one, two or three bedrooms, and not only is there a huge common room, but the bedrooms are enormous as well, and there is a full-kitchen, including a stove/oven/full refrigerator, so it's well-equipped. These are pictures of McMahon Hall from the Fordham website. http://www.fordham.edu/Student_Affairs/Residential_Life/Lincoln_Center/Resources_For/Prospective_Students/Pictures_of_McMahon__11184.html I hope this helps.

If the link doesn't go through, you can research it under Fordham/Student Affairs/Residential Life/Lincoln Center/Resources for Prospective Students/Pictures of McMahon Hall on the Fordham website. Good luck.

i think that the fordham lincoln center campus is located in midtown.. north of NYU (which is in the village)..
