Hi y’all, I would like to know if my stats will allow me to have Ohio State and University of Texas at Austin as my safety schools (please tell me if these are matches and if I should find safer safeties).
I’m interested in computer science and engineering.
ACT: 36 composite
GPA: 3.999 or 4.0 uw, 4.346 weighted
AP: tens ap total/planned: three 5s, three 4s, one 3, three more tests planned.
School does not rank
I also do FIRST Robotics Competition (component leader), Marching Band (squad leader for 3 years), Key Club, Co-founder of school’s gardening club, NHS.
FIRST Robotics Dean’s List Semifinalist
AP Scholar with Distinction award
National Merit _____ (unknown at this time).
Part-time job with Panera
Some volunteering but it’s not significant.
Thank you in advance!
Are you a Texas resident? If so, do you qualify for automatic admission at UT Austin?
Ohio State would be a safety for sure if we are looking at just admissions chances. Some posters argue a safety is a school that you will be easily admitted, that you can afford, and that you will like attending. That is up to you and your family to figure out.
I am an Ohio resident. @yikesyikesyikes
UT Austin would not be a safety then. It would be a reach. A lot, if not most, of these seats are taken up by Texans who qualify for automatic admission.
@yikesyikesyikes Thank you for letting me know! Could you possibly recommend some safeties for me (for computer science)?
UT Austin is a reach for anyone who does not qualify for automatic admission (Texas resident, top 7% rank). In addition, if you are applying for a popular major like computer science, engineering majors, or business, it is not a safety for getting into the major (and trying to change into such a major after enrolling as undeclared can be difficult).
@18college1111
Maryland has a great program and would be a safety for you (not considering finances). UIUC would be a match for their CS + X programs, maybe a bit of a reach for their CSE program.
What are your cost constraints?
I don’t have cost constraints though it would be nice to qualify for merit scholarships at safety schools @ucbalumnus
I agree, UT Austin is a reach for anyone who does not qualify for automatic admission. The auto-admit issue makes any objective analysis dangerous, because combined with the “entry by major” policy, the overall statistics you see become almost irrelevant at the micro-level of admission practices. A 4.0/36 ACT from OOS applying for computer science is in a completely different boat than a 3.75/32 ACT from OOS applying for Philosophy.
