I'm actually in middle school (sorry, I couldn't find the right category so I went to the one that fits the most with my topic). I didn't do ASB in sixth grade because my fear of giving a one minute speech in front of the whole sixth grade (Yeah, I know, stupid). So now I'm applying for a spot as an eighth grade senator. My stage fright hasn't diminished but I'm faced with a new problem; I'm not sure what to write.
So here are my ideas:

-Qualified to be a senator (problem is I don't want to sound like I am boasting about how great my grades are)
-Won't promise the impossible
-Bring up other student ideas in meetings
-Do my best

Anything I should add and/or delete? Also, do you have any tips on getting over my fear of public speaking?

I don’t know about your school, but at my middle school ASB was a joke! I was vice prez then prez and we did absolutely nothing! My speech was corny and dramatic and I regret it so much. I said something along the lines of “I am your voice. Anything is possible. I will change the school and make everything better.” Really, though, all I did was plan terrible dances and terrible events. Haha it was so bad. Honestly, it’s more of a “if you’re friends with more people than your opponents you’ll win” sorta thing. Keep it short and sweet, and don’t sound overdramatic or lame. Speeches don’t really matter, hahaha. God this is probably the worst advice ever. A public speaking tip I learned from Google like in 6th grade is to close your eyes and imagine a stage light in your eyes. I don’t know why it works for me, but it does. It might just be a placebo effect. Whenever I’m nervous, I’ll just close my eyes, imagine I’m on a stage with empty seats, and a blinding stage light. Focus more on your confidence than the speech itself. You can make any speech sound good with a little confidence. Good luck! :)

Thanks! Yeah, it is the same with my school. If you have more friends then you get the votes. Even if you don’t get enough votes, you’re still in ASB, just not a senator.
