Dip in grades sophomore year because I started taking care of my sister at night when my mom went to work. Counselor said she would explain in my recommendation and I think that will be good. Upward trend since sophomore year.

Notable courses taken: AP World History, AP Chemistry, AP Psychology, AP US History, AP Language/Composition, AP Environmental Science, AP Calculus AB, AP US Government, AP English Literature/Composition

Essays should be pretty good, only getting one teacher rec but I expect it to be good/great.

The List:
University of Virginia (top choice)
Georgetown University
Northwestern University
William and Mary
Virginia Tech
VCU (safety)

I've rushed this chance thread but it's just something I'm doing because I'm so nervous. I know my GPA isn't strong, but I'm hoping my good test scores and ECs (with leadership roles) will help me out. I've taken a fairly challenging courseload too =/ Please chance, I'll chance back

Wow, I wish I had your EC’s.
What was your GPA in your jr/sr years? I’m in a similar boat as you–I hope my courseload offsets my GPA (worse than yours).
And you’re not looking any higher than Northwestern? Dang. I feel like I’m going to have to significantly lower my sights. Obviously, from that comment, you can infer that I would otherwise have thought that you had a pretty good shot at all the schools listed (except for UVA–I’m still figuring out how state schools evaluate their in-state candidates… at least the UCs/UT make it seem like GPA is the only thing that matters) even when not factoring race into the equation.

If you can hop on over and give me some advice, I’d appreciate it! Good luck!

University of Virginia maybe, slight reach
Georgetown University, slight reach reach
Northwestern University slight reach
William and Mary match
Virginia Tech in
VCU in

University of Virginia - Good chance (probably because you are from VA)
Georgetown University - Low reach (but possible if you write decent essays)
Northwestern University - Low reach (but possible if you write decent essays)
William and Mary - Match
Virginia Tech - Safety
VCU (safety) - Safety

Hope you get accepted to your top choice school!

your definately in at VCU and virginia tech
william and mary is a good match
UVA might be a slight reach for you, but i think you have a good shot as your SATs are in their median range and being from Va certainly helps as more than 60 percent of the student body is in state(i’m applying too but i’m out of state so its going to be a lot harder for me :S)
Northwestern and georgetown are difficult schools so those are going to be reaches but write really good essays!
good luck

You’re in at VCU and Tech (if you’re not doing engineering) for sure!
I think you have great chances at UVA and W&M I’d say match or high match? With better chances at W&m

Georgetown is tough. I know a few people with awesome stats who got rejected but who knows. You’re URM status will help a lot

I’d say slight to med-reach for both Georgetown and NW

Your GPA is really the only “weak” thing up there, but very impressive ECs, my friend. And I’m totally with you on your thread title.

University of Virginia - Low Match (being from VA will help)
Georgetown University - Low reach
Northwestern University - High Match (are you looking at the Medill School of Journalism? you’d have a great shot at that)
William and Mary - Match
Virginia Tech - Safety
VCU (safety) - Safety
