Judging by the RPS site, my Kelley DA son has been officially assigned Ashton Residence Scholar for his freshman year dorm. I have posted elsewhere that I suspected as much after he was turned down for the Kelley LLC and the lead paint form showed up on RPS.

Now that some dust has settled on our disappointment with the KLLC rejection, I'd like to hear from people with firsthand experience in Ashton. There's plenty of info on the KLLC and McNutt experience, but precious few comments about living in Ashton.

In the unlikely event that a spot opens up at the KLLC, we'll have to choose. In the meantime, this parent is not altogether disappointed in a quieter, single room dorm assignment at a greatly reduced cost.

The single room can be considered either a plus or minus I suppose, but at least a lousy roommate won't be an excuse for losing sleep.

What are your thoughts?

My daughter lived in Ashton as a residence scholar for 2 1/2 years. It is much quieter than other dorms (she was in teter freshman year) and she had much more space in her single than her share of a teter double. The location is excellent, very close to Kelley, but also close to the buildings housing liberal arts classes, such as Ballantine. As a freshman, your son will not have all his classes in Kelley, so a central location is great. And for the price, it is the best bargain on campus. The only hesitation I have to offer you is that there seemed to be very few freshmen on her floor each year. That was good for her, since she wasn’t a freshman, but her floor was not very social because people tended to have established friendships from freshman year and they were serious-minded students anyway. If your son makes friends easily, it shouldn’t be a problem. I have an incoming freshman as well and I wanted her on a floor with mostly freshmen so she could make friends, so we specifically did not apply for residence scholars. She is in teter honors instead. Next year, however, will be different, and she will likely head over to Ashton. Also, he will be required to do a weekly chore, which never took my daughter more than an hour to do. It’s a great value, great location, and a single, so guaranteed no roommate issues!

Thanks so much. That’s exactly the kind of information I wanted to hear.
