I'm Asian, and I've sometimes heard that it's a disadvantage for us when we apply to college because of the high number of qualified Asian people. When I apply next year, would it be more to my advantage to mark myself as Asian or to not state my ethnicity? Are there statistics to help form a conclusion?

EDIT: whoops, I suppose this might be in the wrong forum. I thought I was in "College Admissions."

I honestly don't believe race weighs as heavily as some of these people are making it out to be. If your grades, recs, EC's and test scores are superior then I doubt they will shun you because they "have too many asians" or any other race.

Nobody, unless they directly for admissions, can say how much race plays into the deciding factor. Most of these people are basing their theories on absolutely nothing.

Say several asians apply to Princeton, and only 10% get accepted, but all of them had terrific grades. Then most people assume "oh no, princeton doesn't accept asians" or some bogus idea like that. When infact the reason said people could have been rejected may have been because they did a horrible essay, their recommendations were poor, they had few extra curriculars - there are a lot of deciding factors people don't take into consideration....

But to make the story short, if you're really worried your race will decide your admissions, you can do what my friend did. She applied as Native American. Since the admissions of Native Americans, due to the low numbers of them left, are extrememly low.

If you ever get asked about it, say that you accidently put it in the wrong race - it happens
Good luck though

Wow I don't want to lie...it'll seem really suspicious...I think I will just not state it. Does anyone know if colleges see your name when evaluating your app? My name is undeniably Asian.

"Does anyone know if colleges see your name when evaluating your app? "

Yes. They also see your email address, I found out. So its best not to use an email address containing um.... inappropriate information. I made that mistake.
