Asian American Studies 30...

Hi all- I've been taking this class that Prof. Bascara teaches, it's been 4 weeks now, and I still don't understand what this class is about/ what he is talking about... So my question is: what's on the final, and how does one prepare for the final? I try reading my notes after class but it doesn't make sense at all. Talk about abstract lectures >.>

bumparoo…

bump… someone help me!!!

Go to office hours?

Well, based on BruinWalk info, all you really need to do well is to participate in discussion and use the study guides given before the midterm (no midterm this quarter?) and final. Oh yeah, and do the essays and don’t completely slack off. Personally, I’ve slept through the last five lectures and am not worried in the slightest about the class. The readings are interesting though! (:

I was in this class before i dropped it because i got in off the waitlist to my major class. From what i heard, it is one of the easiest classes at UCLA. Despite his ********ical lectures on mirrors and hammers and such, if you just talk during discussion, and do the work, you will be fine.

I don’t even go to AAS30 lecture anymore… My friend who is also in the class says he doesn’t understand it either and usually just sleeps in class.

yeah, the midterm is a 5 page paper this quarter… so some things have changed. bruinwalk doesn’t really offer any kind of advice on this class…
about this class being easy- does it depend on the TA? my TA gave me a B- on my 2 page paper… but upon carefully scrutinizing my paper i’ve been led to believe that she read my paper wrong, and hence wrote ‘your argument is unclear and unfocused’. i am going to argue for my grade at office hours.
also, since the final supposedly comes from the readings AND the lectures, what parts of his lecture are we supposed to know? all i remember from his lectures are something about hammers and hybridity and some other abstract things that i’m not quite sure i understand. and seeing as how my TA read my paper wrong… -_-… i’m not sure how helpful she will be when we are preparing for the final.
this supposed ‘easiest class ever’ is becoming a nightmare to me. if i can’t get an A in this class, then how will i get A’s in harder classes?

oops typo: hence she wrote

^if she read your paper wrong, dontcha think that’s because she couldn’t understand your possibly “unclear and unfocused” argument? you shouldn’t have to carefully scrutinize your paper to find the point. while your argument may be right, your TA is still the one who grades your paper, so her tastes must be accommodated.

again, if you don’t understand things from lecture, ask the TA/prof during office hours. right now, you’re reaching out to a small group of UCLA students who may or may not have taken AAS30.
