Do you guys think that Asians are still considered URMs at elite LACs like Swarthmore/Amherst/Williams etc. ?

I was told that Asians are often wanted by LACs. Not sure how true this statement is, especially when talking about the elite LACs.

They can be, for example:

<a href=“https://www.amherst.edu/admission/diversity/divoh[/url] ”>https://www.amherst.edu/admission/diversity/divoh
;

However, like any other URM, all Asians are not likely to be viewed equally. Schools may also consider factors such as country of origin, income level, educational level of parents, etc.

So a First Generation Asian might be an applicant of interest?

I don’t think you’d be counted as an URM, but you wouldn’t be harmed as much as you would be at elite universities (HYPSM).

From the link I gave:

the selection committee prioritizes the invitation of students from traditionally under-represented groups, such as African-American, Hispanic/Latino American, Native American, and Asian-American backgrounds, as well as first-generation students.

@entomom

But these schools have about 10% asians. Asians comprise of approximately 5% of the US population. Therefore, they’re not necessarily “underrepresented”, but rather recruited for diversity.

^ I think you proved my point ;).

I don’t think Asians are considered as URMs at WAS and P and Mudd.

Midd, Carleton, Davidson … : Yes

What is WAS?

Excuse my lack of knowledge.

Is it Williams, Amherst, and Swarthmore?

^Yes, although AWS is more commonly used.

A does, as cited in post #5 from the Amherst website.

And add the S as well:

[Discover Swarthmore! :: Admissions & Aid :: Swarthmore College](<a href=“http://www.swarthmore.edu/admissions-and-aid/discover-swarthmore.xml]Discover ”>http://www.swarthmore.edu/admissions-and-aid/discover-swarthmore.xml )

Swarthmore College, one of the premier liberal arts and engineering colleges in the United States, will host its annual all expense paid* overnight weekend program for Asian, Black, Latino/a, and Native American high school seniors

There are a number of Asian groups that are under-represented. Not everyone is Indian, Korean or Chinese - it just feels that way. And Asians (including Indians, Chinese and Koreans) are URMs at the midwestern LACs.
