Asian/Korean Chances at UC Berkeley&other

I really appreciate u guys taking time to read this.....even though it is very long and time consuming. Please evaluate me!

GPA/Letter grades:

Overall weighted GPA: 4.2
10th and 11th grade unweighted GPA: 3.9
Class rank: 10~20%%
School: Public (Kind of competitive but not too many APs or honors offered... hence the low weighted GPA). Also, we are required to take 2 yrs of mendatory PE classes and do not have any social studies courses ( not solid courses; there are some electives) during freshman year. Our school has limited AP classes and just opened AP Bio and two Junior honors course last year.............so yeah my school is pretty bad in terms of academic opportunities even though it's not in a rural community or a ghetto(no offense). In fact, it was impossible for anyone to get weighted GPA higher than 4.2 until last year.

Freshman:
Vocal Choir III (Madrigals; our most advanced choir division): A/A
Creative Writing/Journalism I: C(later replaced by A earned in an equivalent course at a local community college)/A
Spanish I: A/A
Biology I: A/A
English I(9th grade): A/A
PCM II(Geometry): A/A
PE 9: A/A

Sophomore:
Vocal Choir III (same): A/A
Spanish II: A/B
PCM III(trig/algebra II): A/B
Honors Chemistry(one of two honors courses available to sophomores): B/A
English II(10th grade): A/A
PE: Weight Training: A/A
World History: A/A

Junior:
Vocal Choir III (same): A/A
Spanish III: A/A
Honors Pre-Calc: A/A
Honors English III: A/A
Honors US History: A/A
AP Bio: A/A
AP Statistics: A/A

Classes taking in senior year:
Vocal Choir III (same)
AP Spanish IV
AP Calc
Honors Physics
Honors US Gov/Honors Economics
Honors English IV

on a side note, I came to US from South Korea just when I was entering highschool.........but I had experiences living in US before and therefore am very much fluent in english(also US citizen cuz I was born here) Even so it's been pretty tough tryin to get myself settled into this whole new system of education.

You'll notice that I haven't got much AP courses....but the ones I took were virtually all that my school offers rite now. No other AP science classes, or any other AP history courses whatsoever.

SAT/AP Scores:

SAT I: 2300
Verbal: 770, Math: 800 Writing: 730
SAT II: Korean 800/World History 800/ Math IIc 8000/ Biology 800
AP: AP Bio:5 AP Statistics:5 AP US history:5 AP Psych:5

I've also taken number of community college courses (6 total) mainly in history and social science. All A.

Extra Cir/Leadership:
-Sec/tres junior, VP of KEY club senior year
-Sec/tres (probably VP/assistant student director senior year) for Vocal Choir III(our most advanced choir class)
-VP junior, President senior for american cancer society
-secretary for Junior Statesman of America (JSA) junior, VP senior year
-Founded/President of PMSA (Prospective Medical Student's Alliance), where students in our school can come to listen to current med students and doctors about their medical career and also visit similar seminars in Berkeley with pre-med students.
-Wrote/published a short book(about 50~75pg booklet) in Korean about korean international transfer students and guides to adjusting in US.

Volunteer/intern: 120 + hrs from random community service

The idea of writing the book was inspired by my dad who asked me to share my experiences with other students in similar situations like mine......it was a very worthwhile project.

I know I am short on Awards or other ECs, but do I stand a good chance at admissions...? I will greatly appreciate any comments or feedbacks.

Oh, and I know I have a replaced C in freshman year and 3 Bs in sophomore year, which REALLY brings down my chances at some of the schools such as Stanford or Princeton, along with my poor class rank (10~20%). But still, I want to know about my chances at UC Berkley and other UCs, along with stanford and princeton. Will the poor letter grades REALLY kill me that much? I certainly hope not.

Cardinal880804:

UCLA/UCB: Match
UCSD: Safe Match
UCD/UCSB/UCI: Safety
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Super Safety
Stanford: Reach

thnx anyone else....? you can be brutally honest =)

fine i'll give you brutal...

Stanford: Super super super super reach
UCLA/UCB:Super super super reach
UCSD: Super super reach
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Super reach
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Reach

JK!!!!!!!!: yeah just try to improve your gpa and you'll have a good chance at Stanford.

bump.......

not bad chances at all. that book you published sounds interesting.

most of the UCs are good matches. i think even berkeley and UCLA. you're in cali, right? out of state applicant might be a little different story

Bbbbbuuuummmmppp

bbbbummmppp

i think UCLA is a safe match. UCB & Stanford are reaches for everyone lol but you are def. very competitive. i absolutely think you could very well get in both. the rest of the UCs are safeties.

just to mkae corrections....its was 2 Bs not 3, so that's good news. Howbout the freshman grades? Do they count for UCs at all?

nope nope nope

to your question about if they look at freshman grades.
they do look at it, but it isn't averaged into your UC gpa

so UCs do not count freshman grades even if you have like 3Cs or something....? I mean they ask for you to write them down on the app, but do they regard the whole thing as non-existant, like invisible?

They indeed disregard your freshman grades entirely. I had all Cs and Ds in high school freshman year and still got in, because I really cleaned up my act in the following years...

flopsy, what schools did you get into? if I may ask......

You have a shot at Stanford and Princeton if your book is true. A kid from Choate wrote a book that became a best seller in Korea about American prep school and it was white hot over there and was translated for other Asian countries. She is at Harvard. Another high school kid also wrote a Japanese best sell and went to one of the big 3.

Sell lots of copies and who knows?

You have decent chances at Stanford, but sadly Asians have more competition. Still, decent grades, great test scores (1570 and a whole bunch of 800s), and writing a book helps a lot. Keep in mind that Stanford is a lottery school, so don't be too disappointed if you don't get in, although you're certainly qualified.
