Asian Pacfic Islander Affirmative Action

Im of pakistani decent, born in florida… so i guess that qualifies me as a asian/pacific islander… should i report that on colelge apps or not cuz i heard it acutally hurts you (even though im not east asian)

*Is asian/pacific islander right from a person with orginins from the indian subcontinent

Should they report it on college applications or not

IMO you should be proud of your heritage :). Report it even if it hurts your chances. Chances are they're going to find out from the interview or from your last name anyways :/.

And yes, you would technically qualify under asian/pacific islander.

No, a Pakistani is not an Asian Pacific Islander, those would be Somoans, Tongans and people from S. Pacific Islands, not the Asian sc.

Pakistanis aren't Arabs and neither are Afghans. I think Pakistanis would be Asian, yes. If I'm not mistaken, weren't Pakistan and India previously one nation?

I think the category was asian or pacific islander. Not asian pacific islander. I've seen it on several standardized tests, that is the only option. There is no only "asian" option.

Edit: And yes, pakistan is a part of asia. afaik asia goes as far as the middle east, iran i think.

yea its asian or pacific islander .. from what iv heard it includes the indian subcontinent, i jus wanted to make sure an if any1 else thinks otherwize please do share but should i report or not on my app beacuse iv heard it hurst chances but i dont know if its a myth.. my last name isnt particularly asian and not all schools require inviterviews and i think if u dont share your race they just dont take it into consdieration.... so does affirmative action hurt asian americans or not .. should i mark it or leave it blank.

Asians are definitely hurt by affirmative action.

You may be able to get away if your last name isn't asian like...

Not everywhere. There are places where asians are underrepresented, and some schools who would love more favorably on an application from an Asian student because if that.

Also, identifying oneself as Asian isn't going to "hurt" someone more than leaving the question blank. Claiming one's identity may not always help, but hiding it will never help. (Unless there is some sort of "cap" on a certain ethnic group, which I don't think is common).
