I play the Korean traditional guitar, which is absolutely oldschool.
Some of the admissions officers liked it.

The best guitarists in my school jazz bands have been Filipino and Vietnamese, respectively.

I've played recorder (lol - music class in 1st-3rd grade), piano (lessons for 10 years - play for enjoyment often too), and guitar (just for fun, self-taught, 3 years

Yeah like JimmyEatWorld(numbers) said, don't do music just for an app - do it because you love it.

And now I must really go to bed.

I've Self-taught guitar too for since Freshman Christmas when i got my first guitar. But I was just wondering if it's more superior to have an asian playing guitar over Violin esp. for UC's because thats where i mostly want to go at the moment.

Somebodynew... I didn't know Jimmy Eat World said that!!! They're almost my favorite band (Behind Taking Back Sunday and Green Day). And i do agree with their statement because I do play guitar for fun all the time and i dont use it just for apps

^he said that JimmyEatWorld, as in the username. calm down kid

HEy! I play the french horn and I'm asian! Yay I'm an extreme aberration. Does anyone know any asians who play the horn?

Heh. Yeah, that would be me. Sorry to get your hopes up.

Although I'll bet the real band would agree with me too.

all azn in my school are in band,, my school is #1 jazz ban in california
i play trumpet too

Yeah, I'm asian and I play violin and piano. Got a problem?

Actually, I do. Because I haven't won any awards.

I am Korean and I play the sax.

I won some state recognition, but I SUCK at it now.

As many people mentioned, unless you are national at some instrument, it doesn't count.

Sorry, whether it is piano, guitar, or french horn, etc, you have to be very, very good at it to have a definite edge.

I do! I'm not that good, and I just kind of wing it. However, it's good enough because I'm the only person in my school who's willing to put up with that instrument. It's a single horn to boot, thereby increasing its difficulty.

Another Asian hornist here. And I play a single too. Does playing a double make life that much easier? I've never played it.

I play on double horn. Did you just start playing?
It's better to play on a double since the notes above high get sharp and hard to hit.

I play clarinet. OMGOMGOMG I win. :P

eh...what about chinese piano? i can't really describe how bad i am, but it's for fun. should i even mention it?

before someone asks me if a chinese piano is a piano made in china, it's actually a percussion instrument with strings stretched across that you hit with thin rubber-covered bamboo sticks.

I've been playing a couple of years, but singles are all my school has.

toffee, you're talking about gu-zheng, aren't you?

Well i have to say it's kind of true almost every asian american play some sort of musical instrument, funny isn't it? One question, if one plays an instrument, but is not good at it, should he mention it in the app?

Anyway, i don't play any, but i sing a lot in choirs, how would that look in the application?

i play violin and guitar as an asian.

i'm actually talking about yang-qing. it's a little similar, but gu-zheng you use your fingers to pluck the strings.

if you play an instrument, its still considered an extracurricular, just like being a member of a club. but if your not good/arent concertmaster/havent won any awards/didnt start up your own group...just list it along with "member, amnesty international".

It won't hurt unless you focus on it extensively, cuz then colleges will bel ike, ***? he sucks. but mentioning it will help show your well rounded/active in extracurriculars
