Hi, I wanna have a boost in college apps, so please tell me which sounds the most URM? haha
My ancestors are Chinese but from the Cantonese region, not majority Mandarin. So I guess, it’s a minority in China.
Then they moved to Vietnam, so they learned Vietnamese. Not sure if that makes me Vietnamese or Cantonese-Vietnamese.
Would it be better to call myself Vietnamese bc I think thats more URM than Cantonese or should I be mixed Asian although I don’t think that’s the right word? Thanks!
That doesn’t MAKE them Vietnamese, does it? Just learning Spanish doesn’t make me Hispanic.
Please be yourself in the application. Trying to make your application look better will just retract from its quality.
Chinese Americans of Cantonese heritage are not rare. Neither are persons of Chinese heritage among immigrants from Vietnam to the US.
Neither scenario makes you an URM
Just a wishful thinking, so forget it.
I mean they’re rarer than Mandarin Chinese. And fine, never mind
Unless you’re Bajau or something, Asians aren’t URM.
by being asian you are already not an urm, sorry
Basically either you’ll be orm regardless of ancestry (which won’t be asked BTW) or urm (mostly Midwest and South ).
So if you want a URm boost, and assuming you have good stats (30-32 act /1400+ sat, 3.75+ GPA) apply to Grinnell, Carleton, Macalester, St Olaf, Earlham, DePauw, Drake, Gustavus Adolphus, Lawrence, Beloit, perhaps Davidson.
An asian may get a boost at just about any of the LACs @lambchop1000008, including some listed above.
Right- look for schools where asians are solicited.
There are schools where asians are minorities and may be a desired demographic. Sometimes these are small LACs. Thats what I meant. Not understanding the comment being a springboard about a joke about CCs.
Go apply any schools w/o a lot of Asians… and rank top in your chosen field of study… These can be smaller, liberal arts schools in more rural areas in the country. Instead of forcing an URM based on some ancestral background, better off to strategically apply to schools where Asians are not swarming over. JMHO
There are thousands of choices between Ivy level universities and community colleges. All students need a balanced list that includes matches and safeties. Students who don’t do have cc’s as their default safety, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Is this poster asking a serious question? I do wish people would stop trying to find a non-existent hook.
Serious question. Let’s be real, I’m just tryna maximize any way I can get in. Just chill guys.
Grades, high test scores, EC’s that show who you are.
Hooks-you can’t really control. That’s a university need.
Get to know what your targets really look for.
Too many kids assume it’s just what their hs liked.
Work and earn your way in, that’s what I tell everyone.
