Asian who hates math

In math, I honestly do not know why I can't be as good as the other Asians out there. My parents believe I will be a failure if I can't improve in math, so I'd like to know how much it would affect my chances as someone who wants to major in biomedical engineering (pre-med).

GPA: 4.0 UW and 4.67 W

SAT: 800 CR; 730 M; 770 W
ACT: 36 E; 32 M; 36 R; 35 S

SATII: 680 Math II; 770 Bio M; 780 Lit

Class Rank: no class rank

Senior Year Schedule:
AP Calculus BC
AP Statistics
AP Computer Science A
AP Chemistry
AP Psychology
AP Government
AP English Literature

ECs:
National Honor Society
Piano studies
Volunteer work in hospital
Math Team
Science Team
Tutoring

I have no leadership roles at all, while my ECs don't look very spectacular at all.

I will be sending applications to Boston University, Northeastern University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Penn State, and Arizona State.

Thank you very much.

Do you really hate math? I mean, you’re taking calc BC, stat, and chem. With that being said, I’d say that you’re in at all of those schools, but I don’t know too much.

I think you’re shooting too low, to be honest.

you’re taking THREE math classes next year! why are you forcing yourself to do something you hate?
be sure to make your essays extremely personable, because having 7 aps and few extracurriculars makes you seem like a robot.

I am only taking those courses because my parents wanted me to take as many math courses as possible, and I didn’t really think chem would require much math. When I took chemistry in my sophomore year, there was barely any math at all.

AP Chemistry is math-intensive. I promise. It’s not higher-level math such as calculus, but the course focuses on algebra skills and problem solving.

If you want to do BME good luck with not being good at math.

Math is wonderful.

That being said, just a precaution that BME might not be exactly what you think it is. Though it definitely varies by school, but a lot of people have misconceptions over what is in BME. Some schools emphasize the engineering heavily (intensive math) whereas others focus on “bioengineering” more (which seems to be the common conception of what BME is).

Either way. Math’s going to be in a long way for any type of engineering.

And AP Chem is not math intensive. I’m sorry.

LOL. my mom is only letting me take one math class next year because she wants me to “live an easy life and focus on essays.” whatever that means.
uhmmm well last year in ap chem there was a pretty hefty dose of math, and even though they give you a formula sheet you have to know how to USE the formulas they give you.

…What math is there in AP chem? Setting up an equilibrium? Solving a log? If anything AP Chem is more about thinking about what expressions mean and setting them up. The rest is number plugging.

…Yeah that’s not math.

Lollerpants - someone who hates math wouldn’t want to do that.

Please add some more reach schools to your list.

Then tell him to give up his BME dream, cause it’s only going to get harder and harder.

It sure sounds like I won’t be getting in anywhere for biomedical engineering because of my inability to do math. Should I consider changing my major?

Sure you can find topics within BME that might not be math intensive. But all I’m going to say is that math is a great tool which will help you for virtually ANY job in the science field.

If you really cannot do math, then maybe you should consider some other back ups.

Alright dude, right now you’re selling the whole “woe is me I can’t do math”
thing, and I’m just not buying. I don’t know why you are saying you can’t do math, whether it be you’re joking, you lack self-confidence, or you’re looking for reassurence. Another reason why I think this thread is BS. After reading this forum a lot, asians tend to aim high, not low. I know that is a huge generalization, but for the most part it’s true. Now, you have a 4.0 GPA, a really hard work load, and a 2300 SAT. You’re list is all safeties, and you know that. You would know that simply by looking at their website.

So, if this is legit, hopefully you can look past my harshly worded post to see I’m saying you need to aim higher. If this is you looking for pity, again, I’m not buying.

Impossible! All Asians love math :)

This post makes me feel like I’m aiming way too high, so I’ll just assume he’s either ■■■■■■■■ or has no confidence. x_x

Definitely aim higher even though these colleges have good BME programs.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/748439-asian-subpar-stats-3-a.html

are you doing this to show off?? You have a 4.0 gpa, high scores on all subjects from your ACT, and a high SAT score…and you’re afraid that you can’t get into a particular college? Use common sense! This comes to show that just because you are book smart, doesn’t mean you are street smart or SMART period!!!
If your parents think of you as a failure for all those accomplishments, tell them to go to high school and match your high scores.

How about starting one of your essays with this: “I’m an Asian who hates math.” Quite attention-grabbing if you ask me.

guys…this thread was created in 2009
