Asians at UCI

Ok ok...I know that UCI has a large population of Asians. And I know that this turns some people off. What I want to know is: How noticable is the Asian population? Will a caucasian person not "fit in"? This is a stereotype that I want to address. I have plenty of Asian friends and have no bias against Asian people, but as a white person, I'm afraid that I'll feel out of place :/

i would think it's about the same as an asian person going to ucsb and trying to fit in.

lol i go to uni high which is down the street, and ill tell u that u will fit in. easily. the city is all based on immigrant families from EVERY race whether it be middle eastern/indian, asian, watever, therefore race is not an issue because everyone there is used to mixing. but yes, it just so happens to have more asians than anythig else

How could you not fit in? Only a little over 50% of students are Asian. There's still a good amount of white people.
white people fit in with Asians.

Lol that video was hilarious!! its not something that turns me off from the school, just a stereotype I wanted to address.. :)

Ah yes, Yellow Fever. There are plenty of white people on campus. Caucasians are never a rarity! If anything all the Asians here don't act all fobby. Everyone is just American (except for the relatively small number of international students). There are many cliques that have mixed races. This is not high school anymore -- everyone is more open. You'll have a great time if you put effort into being social! (Unless, of course, you want to devote all your time to studies. :])

Thanks for all of your responses! I think I'm just a little nervous about transferring into a new school in my third year :/ I wanna meet tons of people and have a great experience! I still can't wait to move to so cal (I'm in the bay area right now!) I'll be visiting UCI on friday, after that I'll probably be ready to send in my SIR (that is if I like the campus of course!)

It isn't nicknamed by some as "University of Chinese Immigrants" for nothing haha
dont get me wrong im not trying to get into any racial but yes UCI does have a large majority asian population
I myself am a Chinese Immigrant and would gladly love to contribute to the asian population there lol
im sure if you do go that you will get along with evryone and not everyone is asian, and im sure there is diversity

I visited UCI in august and only saw asians. I am white, and know that I will have a problem going to UCI because of the highly asian population (I have nothing against asians at all, many of my friends are asians). I know how it feels for people of other races to go to college with a bunch of white kids, and I know I should keep an open mind and be willing to try new things. I am also worried about the curve system (I hear the curve system is hard because many hard working asian students tend to set high curves). There is nothing wrong with hard working students who thrive to do well, but I do not know if I want to be in a competitive cutthroat atmosphere all four years of college only to be undermined later in my career. I did love the school however, and would be willing to make a small sacrifice such as going to school with a majority of asians. We are all going to college for the same goal, regardless of race and background.

well although you may have seen mainly asians, there is still 50% of the school that is non asian. And we have to remember that of the 50% of asians, everyone is still from different backrounds (Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean etc). I don't think that any school could be too homogenous. If it is, then Fycus and I might be the only white students haha

Correct me if i'm wrong but aren't most (if not all) of the UC's grading curved? I doubt the curved system would be any easier at any other UCs with less "asians". I would even go to say that it is more cutt throat if you're looking at LA, Berkeley, or San Diego, but keep in mind I'm looking at the school as a whole and not any particular major.

I also doubt that it would be easier at the higher tier UC's, but let me remind you that the information I am receiving about the curving system is from a present UCI student (Senior). I have talked with him on multiple occasions and he said the curve plays a large part in how hard the school is.

I recently visited UCI, and it wasn't like the white students were invisible. I remember talking to one Anteater who mentioned out of nowhere, "I just realized I was the only white male sitting at my table at breakfast." He used that to point out how little people notice the race difference.

I doubt the Asian population will be shouting nihao to each other and calling you bokgwai. Also, why do we have to care so much about our race? Aren't most of us American anyway? :)

University of California, Introducing the University 06-07 booklet:

UCI Undergraduates by Ethnicity-
African American: 2.3%
American Indian: 0.4%
Asian/Pacific Islander: 46.6%
Chicano/Latino: 11.9%
White: 25.9%
Other: 5.9%
Not Stated: 7.0%

hibiscus--i totally agree with you, but when people are saying to me "you're going to UCI? wow everyone there is asian..." over and over again, it started to make me wonder if I'd be THAT much of an outsider.
I think what is most important is how chill the student body is and how willing they are to accept new people (my concern as a transfer).
Besides ALL of the UC's have large asian populations...

If you don't seem well received, it's not going to be because of your race. :P

What I'd worry about is the whole commuter thing. I visited on a weekend (!?) and it seems everyone has already made the friends with which to hang out when other people go home for the weekend.

I'm a tad "nervous", but excited about the large Asian population too, and I'm Asian. I've always been 1 of the 3 or 4 Asian kids at school and it's going to be interesting for Asians to suddenly be the majority. But in the end, I doubt it really matters that much.

My engineering classes are actually split 50/50 asians and whites+others... so even the stereotype that engineers are all asian isn't exactly true.

Meh...I'm as white as they come and it hasn't ever bothered me..but I'm not the type to care about that stuff anyway.

Maybe I'll finally see a hot Asian guy...!

lol
