Asians fitting in at SMU?

So I was accepted to SMU and I really like the idea of SMU (still haven't had time to visit..) but im concerned about being asian and being in the south...anyone have any input?

try not to allow the people in hollywood film studios set up a stereotype in your mind about the south. it is beyond me how many ignorant people populate places like nyc and los angeles.

This is from SMU’s website:
Hispanic – 1,067
Black/African American – 702
Asian – 679
American Indian/Alaska Native – 41
Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander – 20
Two or more races – 186
Minority percentage of total enrollment – 24.7%
Minority percentage of undergraduates – 27%

~6% of SMU students are Asian, you won’t be discriminated against (there may be a few xenophobes but every school has those).

i am an Asian living in the south and have been. there really is no discrimination against Asians. there obviously will be a few narrow minded bigots but you cant really help that. there are actually a good amount of Asians living in Texas so I think you will be fine :)

Thanks for the breakdown, barrk123. Always nice to have some numbers for context. SMU does have a very motivated and involved Asian population. Don’t let stereotypes about the ‘south’ fool you! We aren’t all backwards rednecks.

Yeah, I’m an Asian student at SMU. There’s a lot of Asian organizations here but if you’re not a rich white student then you’re going to get discriminated against. This past semester one of the Asian organizations here had to protest on the boulevard because their stuff (posters, etc) gets vandalized all the time.

SMU is a big problem for diversity, even though it tries to promote it its not very welcoming no matter what anyone says.

Stormborn, totally untrue that if you’re not rich and white then you won’t fit in at SMU. That’s a really unfair statement. I’m not rich, and I enjoyed my time at SMU immensely.

There was an incident with various student organizations signs getting vandalized, it wasn’t one group that was being targeted. The incident was an ignorant and immature act by a single person or small group of people and is not indicative of the general attitude on campus. SMU is welcoming and we do try and embrace diversity (of all kinds, not just racial diversity). Diversity is what makes college life interesting.

I ended up going to SMU for two years and then transferring. For anyone else that might be wondering the students here aren’t “racist” but they’re honestly not as accepting
Also, the majority of SMU students are obsessed with money. Coming from a wealthy family probably helped me fit in/transition at SMU, if I’m being completely honest. SMU was super fun my freshman year but by sophomore year it got boring. Same parties, same people, same places.
There are good people here but they’re hard to find and theres too much frat/srat drama
