Asians, Greek Life

Hey everyone, I'm an Indian guy from California and I got direct admission to Kelley so I'm seriously considering IU. I go to a prep school with mostly white people so I'm comfortable, but a lot of my friends are Indian and I was wondering if IU has a good Indian population. Also, I would want to rush a frat so would being Indian hurt me? I don't think there would be racism or anything in this day and age but you never know, and I know how traditional frats could be. I love the idea of IU but I'm not sure I would fit in...of course, I've heard that the midwest is really friendly. If anyone has any thoughts on this I would appreciate it. Thanks!

There are probably some frats that may (consciously or not) hold it against you, but I’m sure there are plenty of frats that it really wouldn’t matter to.

Also, there is a multicultural frat called Sigma Beta Rho. Here’s their facebook page.

I know they call themselves multicultural, but I went to one of their parties and they are about 90% Indian. Its not exactly a traditional frat since they don’t have a house, and they aren’t affiliated with the school (as I just learned from the IFC website: [Interfraternity Council of IU](http://www.iubifc.com/)).

I’ve seen a fair amount of Asians and even some Indians in IFC frats… I mean obviously they are the minority but if you really want to rush I’m sure you can find a group that you’ll fit in and be comfortable with.

People here are some of the friendliest I’ve ever met in my life. Sure you’ll come across your fair share of *******s, but they are really minimal compared to the amount of genuinely nice people at IU.

The midwest is a pretty nice place. I didn’t really realize it until I started visiting other places like NYC. Only in Indianapolis have I been walking down the street and been waved at by people I’ve never met. That isn’t to say that everyone here is like that; if they were, people would call it utopia.

I really don’t think the majority of the frats will hold your ethnicity against you. They typically go more for “fit”. In other words, they look at your profile and analyze your conversations to see if you would been a good edition to the type of brothers in the frat. In some of the frats, you will not be a good fit; no one is a perfect fit everywhere! If you don’t get into a certain frat, I certainly would hope it’s for reasons other than being Indian.

Good luck with your decision!

I’ve seen maybe a handful of Indian guys in IFC… I am Asian and I am the only one living in my house this year (although next year there will be two)…

Now there always will be jokes about your race, like it or not, but in a friendly way. Its just part of being in fraternity.

And no, there is no significant Indian population or group that I am aware of. There seems to be a lot of middle eastern / koreans hanging at the library.

^ It’s not significant in relation to…? I have roughly 20 friends that are strictly Indian. They’re not hard to find at all. You will find a lot of people from the Middle East but also a lot of Indian. Can you tell the difference? It’s similar to how a lot of people can’t tell between East Asians. There are a lot of Koreans in the library but there should be statistically even more Chinese since there are more international students from China.

Significant if you live in an IFC Fraternity, which the OP is trying to inquire. Sorry, I can’t even count on two hands number of Asian Men I know in an IFC Fraternity.

Yes I can tell the difference, although it is hard to tell sometime. I am east asian, it is very easy to differentiate between Koreans and Chinese.

Maybe you live in Smallwood, yes easy to find. You have your enclaves somewhere, sometimes you can find them in clubs catering to that nationality.

There aren’t a lot, but IU also isn’t that racially diverse. You’ll be fine. If you’re a cool kid and you’re a good fit for the fraternity, you won’t have any problems. I can think of several Asian and Indian guys in each “top” house here off the top of my head.
