So I have a friend who's obsessed with Ole Miss (he actually wanted to apply to SMU but decided it was too expensive and not really worth the money) and is planning to apply there come this fall when college application period starts again..

He wanted to know how someone who is not of Caucasian race would fit in at a Southern school such as Ole Miss? Not sure if he's heard some crazy stories on the racial issues there, but just wanted to know if he'd be able to blend in and make friends and such...

my cousin who is asian visited nashville and he partied at vanderbilt for a week. he told me white guys at vandy were looking for trouble and wanted to fight him all the time. he said that the white guys at vandy are . i am not sure if this applies to ole miss but i am going out on a limb here and saying it does.

Is racism an issue at Southern/East coast colleges? I'm thinking of applying to a few in the Midwest/New England area but I'm not looking for any trouble. I mean, being Asian myself, I wouldn't want to have to surgically remodel my face every other month. -__-

Depends on the school. If I were you, I would be sure to check the percentage of Asian American students at each school you consider, just to get a sense of wether or not they are signficant part of the campus culture.

For the schools I'm applying to, the percentage varies around...6-8 I'd say. Some are LACs, so out of maybe 3,000 students, 6-8% really isn't that many.

Is he from Mississippi? If so, the only reason to even consider going there is for the cheap tuition. If he is out of state, tell him to forget about it. It's just not a good college experience; poor academics, over excessive partying, and diversity and tolerance are non-existent (I've visited it several times and I know people who go there).

The only reason he's applying there is because they have a forensic chemistry program, that and he shares my crazy love of SEC football..he's been wanting to go into that field since forever. And yes, he's had this fascination way before the whole CSI thing and the craze over it.

He's looking at a few other schools as well, none of which are considered worthy on this site, so I'll omit the names of the schools

I'd be surprised that Asians would get much negative attention at Old Miss. I looked at Oxford as a potential retirement spot and found it to be a decent college town with a significant arts community for a small town. I'd also guess chemistry would not attract the party contingent.

I'm no expert, but he might really enjoy Ole Miss. Would he fit in in other ways? Is he politically conservative (or apolitical)? Is he interested in Greek life? Would it bug him if there are a lot of hard partiers in his dorm?

If he's basically an Ole Miss type who happens to be Asian, I'd be far less concerned than if he's a blue-state granola who happens to be Asian.

I don't see any harm in applying. If he gets in, he should definitely visit before making up his mind, and he'll know pretty quickly whether there are segments of the social scene where he is not welcome.

I think he is politically conservative, he did vote for the current president both times...he's a big social person so I'm sure he will be looking into the Greek life as well...

Not sure about the hard partiers in dorm, he'll probably just end up being on campus or at the library most of the time...that's just how he is when it comes to study habits.

It's probably safe to say he is an Ole Miss type who happens to be Asian..he much prefers to be in a red state than a blue state...

I don't know about Ole Miss, but speaking of Southern colleges from my experience it doesn't seem to be that bad. UGA is primarily Caucasian but I have Asian friends going there who're doing just fine. I agree with everyone else who says your friend should look up the percentage of Asians at Ole Miss though.

Well, he's a pretty social person and probably wouldn't mind the attention. He was just worried, or rather curious, about how people there will treat him or whether they will be standoffish to him because of his race and color.

He is welcome to go to ole miss. I personally go to MUW and he would be welcome here as well since there are some people interested in Asia here. There is a international club at MUW as well as another club that focuses on Asia specifically. :)
