I'm a student attending SMC, will be my 2nd year attending this coming fall. I plan on applying next fall and entering either UCLA or UCB in the Fall of 08'.

Major: Communications
GPA: 3.65
TAP Certified: No

Can anyone realistically tell me my chances of getting into the communication department at either of those institutions? Are the difficulty of the courses factored into your chances at admissions?

I've taken the following courses:
-Pre-Calculus
-International Politics
-US Politics
-History of East Asia
-Calculus
-Macroeconomics
-Microeconomics
-Critical Analysis and Composition (English Course)
-Communications 1

This fall I'm finishing up my pre-reqs for UCLA and UCB.

Can anyone tell me my REALISTIC chances at admissions into the two institutions and possible a way to make it to those institutions?

Also, I was very involved in EC's while I was in high school, does this factor in anyway?

Thanks so much for your help!

P.S. I'm an in-state applicant. US Citizen. Korean-American.

This coming fall I plan to take the following courses.
-Statistics
-Fundamentals of Biology
-Public Speaking
-Interpersonal Communication
-General Physics

i took the majority of those classes, and i was a communications major but now i am a soc. major. i think u have a good chance at ucb, for ucla, its quite uncertain since the avg acceptance gpa is a 3.9 for that major.

btw, u need statistics.

A 3.65 won't get you into any of those schools for your major, sorry. Especially since you don't have TAP for UCLA.

Hi there, the average GPA of UCLA admits to Comm Studies this year was 3.89. My GPA was 4.0, and I got into both UCB and UCLA's Comm Program. I know that UCLA's program is fiercely competitive--you'll need to boost your GPA in order to get into UCLA's. I think you'll have a pretty good shot at UCB if you do well next fall--strive for an upward trend in your GPA!

I also recommend doing media-related work on the side--it doesn't have to be anything extravagant (like a major internship), but participating in the school paper, being a radio DJ, volunteering at a TV station, even helping out in advertising something, et cetera. All of these little things will help you.

Good luck!

Hi guys, It's me again. I was browsing through UCLA's Communication Studies site and I saw that UCLA students have to apply to this program in April. Is it possible to transfer to UCLA as a Sociology major or a less competitive major and apply to the Communications program in April?

Thanks!

i was thinking about doing that as well, not because my gpa is not competitive (because it is...i have a 3.95 and i have all the classes required for that major), but because i was DUMB as hell and i should have picked comm in the first place. Im over it... but anyways, to help you out lol...if u do that, u have to wait a year @ ucla (meaning, acquiring 35-45 units at ucla), and your gpa needs to be about the same as mine 3.8-4.0. Its just as competitive, and thats why it says that you need to apply by april, thats for people ALREADY IN ucla, then they tell u in september if u got in or not.
