Ask a 1 year Computer Science Cal Transfer Anything

^ I think yes :slight_smile: I’m taking Math55’s equivalence right now lol.

@asphyxiac -

That, I’m actually not sure about. You might want to ask a Cal counselor about that.

“Credit Option: Students will receive no credit for 55 after taking Computer Science 70.”

[Math 55 - UC Berkeley Department of Mathematics](http://math.berkeley.edu/courses_lowerdivcourses_math55.html)

Is it realistic for a Washington state CC student to transfer to UCB? I should be able to get into the University of Washington but want to keep my options open. We only have two CS courses at my school.

@saxman66 -
Yes it is realistic. Cal has plenty of out-of-state transfers

Are OOS students expected to have better stats than IS students? What if our schools don’t have some prerequisite courses like discrete mathematics and introduction to circuits?

Sorry asphyxiac, I was wrong

https://hkn.eecs.berkeley.edu/courseguide/index.php/CS70</a></p>

Darn it, now should I drop the discrete math class I’m taking at my CC right now lol :(

@saxman66 - I’m not sure how they rank out of state transfers vs international students, but I’d assume you guys are in the same pool? Sorry.

@sparkyboy - Once again, I’d recommend you to talk to a counselor. Sure you wont get credit for it, but you can still get it to get the course satisfaction. Anyways, it’s up to you. I’d rather learn something new than to retake it.

@xcaliberse

do you know how long will berkeley give us response after applying SPMP Mentee application? i’ve talked to my CCC counselor and she said that i took the application form (in paper) and filled it out, then i scanned it and email it to the indicated address on the application form. that’s what i did but i’ve never seen any reply from them. any idea?

If you have taken a Math 55 equivalent at community college, check with the CS division about credit if you take CS 70. (It is possible that the units from your non-Berkeley Math 55 equivalent course will be what is erased, but check to see if that is actually the case.)

@happyaray -

I would call the TRSP center to check the status of your application. I heard from them pretty fast I believe.

what’s the male-to-female ratio in your CS classes?

@Rockoz - I’d say about 80% are guys. But that’s because engineers are mostly guys. If you want to meet girls, join clubs/organizations. That’s the best way to meet other people outside of your major.

How are the upper division CS courses like? Are they far more challenging than the classes you took in community college? Did your CC prepare you well or are you struggling to keep up? Thanks.

I’m still working on the 61 series. But as far as I know, the upper divisions are generally easier than the lower division work. (not from my experience).

^^i would think that upper divs would be harder. The 61 series should be easy compared to classes like 170, 184, 164, etc.

Ehh… the 61 series are like the weeder classes kinda. The grading curve is a lot more strict for the lower division as well.

CS 61A is not “curved”: [61A Information](61A Information)

CS 61B is not “curved”: http://www-inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~cs61b/fa11/handout0.pdf</a></p>

ucbalumnus is correct. i took 61b. there is no curve.

There’s always a curve. Even if they say it’s on a “point value” system, they’ll always curve it at the end (adjustment period). I didn’t take 61b, but for 61A where it was a “point” system, there was still a curve at the end. That’s what the policy states. You can’t have grades that go too low otherwise nobody will graduate on time since all the midterm grades are so low. So far in all of my technical classes that I’ve taken (cs61a, cs70, ee42), there were curves.

Trust me. It’s curved. I can tell you that ALMOST nobody in cs61A had the points to receive an A before the curve. (that’s from taking a look at the grade distributions online). My friends took 61A before I did as well and there were curves. My friend who is currently taking 61A says there is a curve. (The professor told them that if they had at least a B- on the midterm, then their grade is still at at an A/A-)

Also if you expect to take 61B w/ Hilfinger and not have a curve, then pretty much the entire class is gonna get D’s. =)
