Ask a '12 UCLA Transfer Admit Anything

Transferred this year as a Philosophy major. Attending my 2nd quarter now. Ask me anything, especially the application process.

I have a few general UC questions.
First, how much harder is UCLA compared to CC.
Second, where do you live? Transfer dorms? Apt? And how is it?
Did you have all the prerequisites done? What was your UC GPA?
Have you tried Diddy Riese? Thy place is good haha. I go every few weeks.

what was your GPA? and did you transfer from a CC?

What’s the most social transfer dorm at UCLA?

@mermaker The classes are definitely more intense… as in more material to cover. My hands hurt from so much note writing during each course. Definitely gonna start bringing my macbook next week. CC professors for the most part took their time going over the material and emphasized writing stuff down from their slides. But at ucla you better write it down quick because they talk fast as hell and less emphasis on lecture slides.

The exams for me have been a nuisance, they’re for the most part all short response questions and the questions are usually tricky, nothing straightforward. Most of my classes have finals on the last day of 10th week instead of using the finals week. So if I have like 3 on Thursday, I’ll be taking 3 finals on the same day. But honestly if you just study your azz off there’s nothing to worry about.

I commute since I live in Santa Monica. However it’s been detrimental for my social life since most people meet new peeps in housing.

I finished my pre-reqs 4/4. My GPA was a 3.4. During classes, a lot of people didn’t take their pre-reqs so it’s not going to be such a huge factor in admissions as long as it’s not an impacted major. I think a decent GPA is the biggest factor for UCLA.

I’ve been there a while ago but not in a while. Thanks for reminding me to go check that place out again!

@tarayorkie my gpa =3.4 and I went to Santa Monica College

@hopingtoxfer From what I’ve been told

Residential Halls are the most social but the living conditions are pretty bad

Plazas are more of a hotel and decent social life

Suites looks like apartments and the least social of the 3

How long did it take for you to transfer?

what was your timeline like? as far as application first response etc. thanks for contributing and hopefully next year ill be a fellow Bruin!

Hey man if its not too much trouble would you mind chancing me?

Do you regret picking UCLA at all? How is the philosophy department?

Just want to clarify, your 3.4 GPA is what you have right now at UCLA, or is that what you applied with (after you received your Fall grades)?

Yikes thought my thread died down! Thanks for the questions guys.

@glara It took me 2.5 years to transfer since I was a total f-up in HS and had to take a bunch of remedial courses.

@RCLA325 Well it began with the TAG in which I tagged to UCSB. SB doesn’t approve your Tag or anything for some reason, they just tell you they received it and will approve you after they see your uc application. Useless I guess since at the time I had a higher GPA than 3.2. Then the uc application which I submitted around mid november. And then I pretty much chilled until January where I updated my application once more. Afterwards it was basically a waiting game. I wasn’t too worried since my major is pretty ‘meh’ competition wise.

UCs accept people in batches except for UCLA and UCB where they announce it on one day, for UCR I was accepted in the 1st batch which was on the first of March. It was like my last choice school so it was whatever. UCSB came next a month later where I was accepted in the 2 or 3rd batch. I was pretty nervous since I wasn’t accepted in the first batch but I finally checked the UCSB site maybe 2-3 weeks later to know I got accepted. I felt relieved since SB was my realistic target in a way. On April 20th, I finally got accepted to UCLA. There’s this trick where you can find out if you got accepted a week or two earlier through ‘myucla’. I’ll get further into that if anyone’s interested. It actually works lol. Anyhow, a week later I found out I got rejected from Berkeley and Irvine accepted me a week later. UCSD put me on their waitlist which I honestly couldn’t care less about. Good luck to you though, I know how anxious you probably are right now but it’s still a few months away so just do well in your classes.

@aztec There’s no guarantees to ucla but you’re most likely in dude. A friend of mine who had a 3.52 GPA for poli sci got in last year with me. A bunch of people lower than that got in. Don’t worry.

@Andrew, honestly it’s probably the best or 2nd best UC of all UCs so I’m definitely not going to complain. The campus is eye candy and the students are pretty nice too. It’s really rare to find any easy classes at ucla but I guess that’s what makes the school really competitive.

I think my school did a chitty job of preparing me as a philo major because I honestly had no idea what the professor was saying. The major requirements are also pretty demanding too. I will be changing my major to English or Anthropology in a few days.

@themadman 3.4 was the GPA I had AFTER the fall grades in CC.

Please share more about that UCLA trick thing.

Thanks Philo, great info

Hi thank for sharing your experence

Tell us more about the trick. I also want to know if you got financial Aid and if yes how did u get it? Do you know of a good program or club that we should join one we get in?

No problem guys glad to see I’m a bit of help

The trick is you go to my.ucla.edu and create an account with your uc application id as a summer session student. You then can see your financial aid status, if you see your financial aid tracking listed, you’re accepted. If you don’t see your financial aid stuff listed, you’re most likely not in.

Here’s the thread from last yr

how hard was being a philosophy major for you at cc?

It was practically just memorizing lecture notes and some form of creative writing. nothing mind boggling stuff like at ucla
