Ask a BU Freshman

lalaz: I am in Sargent and those are the BIO and Chem courses listed under the Human Phys major, and they’re both under 1st semester.
So, let’s say I’d have like 20 credits now, which isn’t allowed. 14 of those are required, stuff I can’t really mess with. If I take out jazz band and jazz combo ( :frowning: ), I’ll have 2 credits open. But Theory is 3 credits and Ear Training is 1, and both are required for a music non-performance minor. Chances are I’ll place out of Theory 1, so would I be able to just start Theory 2 next semester and still be on track for everything as long as I take Ear Training this semester too? Plus I won’t have those random “Intro to Health” seminars which should give me more space, right? That would leave me like 1 more credit which I could use to audition for the jazz big band or combo.

Thank you for the help btw! And yeah I’ve heard Abrams is a pretty cool cat. I got a 5 on the AP Chem test so I’m not that worried about Chem material, but I understand how the amount of lectures/work/labs could eat up my time…

Ahh your a Human Phys major ok that explains it. Out of curiosity, do you have any AP credits for a Social Science or Humanities? If so use them, it’ll allow you to take the courses that you wish to take.

And I think you should be fine, the one thing is I am not sure if you are allowed to separate the courses, and if i remember correctly you have to audition before you take the courses. And if you know your going to place out due to AP credit, then yeah you should be fine in taking it in second semester.

Hello, everyone! I’m a junior, and I’m considering applying to BU next year (SMG for Business Administration and Management). From what I’ve read it seems like it would be a good place for me. The only thing I’m a little worried about is the financial aid because there’s absolutely no way I can afford BU without a lot of aid. What do you think my chances are of getting in at all/getting a good amount of aid?

SAT: 1910 overall
670 reading
590 math (which I plan on improving on the June SAT, don’t really know what happened there)
650 writing

I carry all honors/AP courses; I just took the AP Language and Composition test and I’m pretty confident that I got at least a 3. Next year I’ll be taking AP Literature and AP Calc.

I haven’t taken the ACT or any subject tests yet, and I’m not really sure what my GPA is since our school doesn’t give them to us. My overall average is around a 95, and I’m ranked 2nd in a class of around 140 people. Also, I don’t have any extra curriculars (which I know is terrible but there is NOTHING interesting offered at my school that isn’t sports related) and I will have a good amount of community service by the end of next year.

Any help or advice is appreciated!

lalaz: Do government and economics count as social sciences? Cuz I’m pretty sure I will get credit for those but besides AP Music Theory those are the only Humanities/Social Science APs I took.

interludes: if you can play up a passion for community service, and raise that math score, you’ll be a shoe in.

any info about what they look for in applicants for the college of fine arts, particularly for visual arts?

Yes Moxess, those only count as Social Sciences, Humanties would be like AP Literature, AP Language/ AP Music Theory.

Okay so I am having a really hard time figuring out what kind of laptop I should get and what specs I need for the BU ENG program. I know kind of what I want and I have a price range of 1500 at max but I am getting indecisive about what to finally choose.

Can you tell me what most ENG students use, the specs and why?

Hi, I’m a senior in high school and I’d really like to get to know more about BU. It seems to be a great choice for me, as I want to major in International Relations. If anyone could tell me more about this program, and/or my ability to get into it, that’d be wonderful. :)

Here are my stats:

 • 2.85 gpa (Terrible, I know. I had a rough time in high school.)
 • 2110 SAT score [790 reading, 640 math, 680 writing]
 • Band all four years.
 • Leadership positions and membership in several clubs.
 • 4 years of French and 1 year of Latin.
 • Nearly all my high school courses were AP.

I’d also need financial aid though, seeing as BU is extremely expensive for out-of-state students and I have not-so-much money at the moment.

Also…very important question here:
Grade Deflation. Is it really that big of a deal at BU?

@personxyz… BU is private so its the same tuition for instate as it is for out of state as it is for people from Burkina Faso, the aid you get is up to you in your pursuit of scholarships and other stuff. how’d you manage such a low gpa if (nearly) all of your classes in hs were ap? shouldn’t you have… idk, dropped some for honors maybe?

@forzworn Oops. Forgot it was private. Anyway, my high school doesn’t offer honors. I took AP because regular classes were much too easy for me. Sure, I could get a near perfect gpa with regular classes, but I hated taking easy classes. I was too bored.

Great thread, guys!

I’m really interested in BU and i was wondering if i have a chance? Can anyone who goes to BU give me some advice? Here are my current stats:

GPA: 3.4 UW(my school doesn’t weight)
Freshmen: 3.45 first semester, 3.78 second semester
Sohpomore: 3.1 first semester( i know, kill me), 3.2 2nd semester(not much better!)
Junior: 3.2 first semester, 3.7 2nd semester
-so my grade was like a loop

-good freshmen year, got lazy screwed up sophomore year, picked up as a junior this year and now im trying to maintain a 3.7 for this semester. I hope to keep 3.7+ for senior year.

Advanced Classes: 1 AP, 1 Honors, 1 Advanced, 1 College class.(this will be the total amount i’ve taken including senior year).

Extracurriculers:
-3 years of Cross Country
-FBLA officer for sophomore year
-200+ hours of community service(probably get a load more in by next year)

Standardized Tests:
SAT: 1600(not impressive)
ACT: 28

Other:
Ethnicity: asian
Out of state
School: Public, top 30 i believe.

Any kind of advice would be extremely helpful! Thanks!

grigg. You’re chances at BU are not incredibly small, but could be better! My friend got in with a 30 ACT and I got in with a 2050 SAT. Use those as goals!

Thanks! I’m definitely going to try to bring it up to a 30+. Probably going to use the summertime to study.

I want to major in Com/Public Relations and minor in psych and graphic design. Is that weird/hard?

ALso what do you think about specialty housing, specifically Warren’s COM floor?

What can you tell me about football, and more specifically the marching band? School support, or games deserted? I want to join a marching band, but it would defeat the purpose if I joined one that was basically dead.

BU doesn’t have a football team. Not since 1997.

Kalookakoo, they do have a marching band though. I’m not in it but I have friends who are. I think there are 100-120 members. Read more here: [Marching Band / Pep Band Boston University Bands Boston University](http://www.bu.edu/bands/marching-band)

You can do Pep Band too which is performing during hockey/basketball games. It seems a little less time consuming, and you get into all the games for free. Or you can do both.

I was wondering how they have a marching band but no football program o.O

Anyone care to explain?
